Chapter 60 - The Confrontation of Blood

The corridor descended into a suffocating silence, broken only by the muffled ticking of the grand clock mounted high on the limestone wall. Thomas recovered his composure with the practiced arrogance of a Montgomery, pulling at the lapels of his cashmere overcoat, though his hands trembled slightly as he smoothed the fabric.
"Tyler," Thomas said, his voice regaining its smooth, condescending veneer. "You shouldn't have brought the girl here. You don't understand the machinery my mother set in motion. This isn't about pride anymore. It’s about survival. The trusts are crumbling under federal scrutiny. Without Maeve’s registration, every holding company in Luxembourg and Panama dissolves into the state."
"Let them burn," I said, stepping between him and my daughter. "Let every cent Denise stole rot in the vaults."
"You ignorant little girl," Thomas hissed, his eyes flashing with the same unhinged malice that had driven Denise into her prison grave. "You walked into our home three years ago with nothing, and you think you can tear down a century of wealth with your moral righteousness? Without this money, Maeve is nothing! With it, she is the sole proprietor of three sovereign estates!"
"She is my daughter," I spat, stepping so close I could smell the expensive tobacco and bitter coffee on his breath. "And she will grow up with clean hands. She will grow up knowing her father works with wood, not with blood money and stolen names."
The mahogany doors of Room 312 swung open, and a severe-looking magistrate with steel-rimmed spectacles stepped into the corridor, flanked by two foreign bailiffs holding leather-bound court dockets.
"Monsieur Montgomery," the magistrate announced in precise, formal English. "The registry is open. Are the biological claimants present for the validation?"
Thomas spun toward the magistrate, raising his chin. "Your Honor, as the surviving senior male of the Montgomery trust, I present the primary petition for guardianship—"
"The petition is fraudulent, Your Honor!" Vance interrupted, thrusting a diplomatic pouch bearing the gold seal of the United States Department of Justice into the magistrate's hands. "This man faked his death off the coast of North Carolina to escape federal warrants for grand larceny and conspiracy. Furthermore, the true father of the child is standing right here."

Tyler stepped forward, reaching into his coat pocket. He didn't produce legal briefs or convoluted foreign trusts. He pulled out the battered, ink-stamped birth certificate from the county hospital in Virginia, along with the certified genetic registry signed by the federal court during Denise’s final hearing.
"My name is Tyler Vance-Montgomery," Tyler said clearly, looking directly into the magistrate's eyes. "I am Maeve’s father. I have full, unassailable legal custody under international treaty. And I am here to formally and permanently renounce every claim, every penny, and every title associated with the Montgomery name."
