Chapter 57 - The Unbroken Line

"Shut up!" Tyler barked, planting his heavy boot squarely against the man's chest, pinning him against the concrete base of the lathe. "My daughter has never set foot on European soil. Denise’s trusts were dismantled by federal court order three years ago!"

"Federal courts have no reach in the Canton of Schwyz," the man sputtered, a grim wheeze whistling in his chest. "You think Denise spent forty years hoarding gold just to leave it to the taxman? The private protocols were never submitted to your domestic judges. The moment Thomas produced that dummy lockbox at the shoals, he triggered the dead-man clause. Either Maeve’s estate claims the family vault, or Thomas assumes full legal guardianship as the surviving patriarch of the bloodline."

The cold, calculated cruelty of the Montgomery dynasty hit me like a bucket of icy water. Denise wasn't trying to steal Maeve for love or family pride; she had created a legal labyrinth where our daughter was the sole surviving key to an offshore empire worth tens of millions. And Thomas, having faked his death in the cold Atlantic swells, was using the shadow of foreign laws to rip our child from our arms.

Outside, the shrill wail of emergency sirens pierced the roar of the mountain rain. Blue and red flashing lights began to strobe across the pine canopy as three black tactical SUVs crested the driveway, their tires churning the mud into brown foam.

Federal agents swarmed the workshop within seconds, rifles raised, tactical lights cutting through the haze. Vance himself led the breach, his trench coat soaked through, his service weapon held low and ready.

"Clear! Clear!" Vance bellowed, his eyes scanning the barn before locking onto Tyler, who stood bruised and bleeding beside the pinned courier, and then onto me, clutching Maeve against my chest.

"Vance," I gasped, my voice breaking. "He said Thomas is in Switzerland. He said there’s a foreign filing at dawn."

Vance holstered his weapon, stepping over the spilled tools to inspect the papers scattered on the sawdust. He crouched, his gloved fingers turning over the red-wax-sealed documents. His jaw hardened into iron.

"He’s not lying about the protocol," Vance said quietly, glancing up at Tyler. "Denise set up an automated legal trigger tied to her death in federal custody. But what this mercenary doesn't know is that we've had the Bern consulate under twenty-four-hour surveillance since the lockbox washed ashore."

"Then arrest him!" Tyler shouted, his hands trembling with adrenaline. "Put Thomas in a cell next to his mother's old grave!"

"We can't touch him on foreign soil without primary jurisdiction," Vance replied grimly. "And under their civil code, as long as he claims he is Maeve's legal guardian seeking her inheritance, the Swiss authorities have frozen our extradition request. Unless..."

"Unless what?" I demanded, holding Maeve tighter.

"Unless the registered mother presents herself in the Geneva Chancery before the market opens tomorrow morning," Vance said, meeting my gaze with unflinching gravity. "And signs the absolute revocation of the Montgomery bloodline in person."
