Chapter 56 - The Fracture of the Will

The intruder’s head whipped toward the sudden crash at his flank, the suppressed muzzle drifting an inch off Tyler’s position. That split-second distraction was all Tyler needed.

With a roar that ripped through the storm, Tyler lunged from behind the planer, swinging a four-foot length of kiln-dried white oak with the terrifying momentum of a man fighting for his daughter’s life. The heavy timber slammed violently into the intruder’s raised arm, knocking the rifle off-line as a muted *thwack* discharged into the ceiling rafters, showering sawdust over the concrete floor.

The rifle clattered across the floorboards, spinning straight into the shadows near the lathe. The man stumbled, swearing in coarse French, but he was trained; he didn't panic. He rolled with the impact, pulling a short serrated blade from his tactical belt and slashing upward toward Tyler’s ribs.

"Tyler, look out!" I shouted, closing the distance and driving the pointed tip of the iron poker straight into the intruder’s exposed shoulder blade.

The man grunted in agony, the blade deflecting off Tyler’s heavy leather apron. Tyler countered with a brutal short-arm hook that caught the intruder square across the jaw, snapping his head back and sending him crashing against the iron band of the workbench. The heavy leather satchel slipped from his fingers, falling open on the floor.

Dozens of crisp, blue-embossed legal folios spilled across the shavings, stamped with the unmistakable royal crest of the Principality of Monaco and the red wax seals of the Zurich Chancery. Across the top of the foremost document, in Denise’s manic, angular handwriting, was written a single directive: *Cession of Bloodline Rights — Maeve Vance-Montgomery.*

"Mommy!" Maeve’s tiny, trembling voice cut through the carnage. She was peering out from under the burlap, tears cutting tracks through the fine cedar dust on her cheeks.

"Stay there, baby! Close your eyes!" Tyler yelled, breathing hard as he stood over the dazed man, holding the heavy wooden post ready to strike again if the intruder moved a muscle. "Clara, get her! Get her into the storm cellar behind the woodstack!"

I sprinted to the cabinet, scooping Maeve into my arms. She buried her face against my neck, her small hands clutching my wet shirt with iron strength. "Daddy hit the bad man," she sobbed, trembling violently.

"Daddy protected us, baby. We're safe," I whispered, though my heart was hammering so hard it felt bruised against my ribs.

On the floor, the intruder groaned, blood trickling from the split skin above his eyebrow. He looked up at Tyler, not with fear, but with a chilling, bloodied grin. "You think... you think I’m the collector?" he wheezed, coughing up crimson. "I’m just the messenger. Thomas isn't on the mountain. He’s at the registry in Bern. If those papers aren't scanned with her biological markers by dawn, the Geneva courts will declare her an abandoned ward under the foreign maritime treaty. He’ll take her legally, Tyler. With foreign marshals at your front gate."
