Chapter 15 - The Cold Metal Boundary

Twenty minutes into the magnesium infusion, the world felt like it was moving through warm, thick molasses. My skin was on fire from the drug, burning from the inside out, while shivering chills shook my teeth. Tyler hadn't let go of my hand once. He sat on a plastic stool pulled flush against the hospital bed, whispering verses, memories of our early dates, promises of nursery paint colors—anything to drown out the rhythmic, terrifying gallop of the fetal monitor.

The heavy wooden door of the delivery suite clicked open quietly. A detective in a dark trench coat stepped inside, accompanied by Owen, whose jaw was set in rigid stone.

"Mr. Mercer? Ms. Vance?" Detective Reynolds spoke in a hushed, respectful tone, holding a laminated clipboard. "I apologize for intruding at this moment, but the magistrate is processing the emergency restraining order violation and we need your formal sign-off on the chain of custody for the documents found in Denise Mercer's vehicle."

Tyler didn't look away from my face immediately. He smoothed a sweat-soaked strand of hair from my forehead before turning his head toward the detective. "What was in her car?"

Owen stepped forward, his eyes dark with an anger that had simmered into cold resolve. "She had three pre-loaded burner phones, twenty-two thousand dollars in bundled cash, and two plane tickets under fraudulent passports to Belize. One in her name, and one under a forged infant birth certificate registered to a fictitious identity."

A cold shudder ripped down my spine, chilling me despite the magnesium burn. "She... she was going to take the baby straight from the hospital," I whispered, the words catching in my dry throat. "She never wanted a reconciliation. She wanted to kidnap her."

"She had a duffel bag with infant formula, preemie clothing, and sedatives," Detective Reynolds confirmed bluntly. "The district attorney has already upgraded the charges. Attempted child abduction, grand theft of an estate, aggravated stalking, and multiple counts of criminal harassment. There will be no bail hearings granted tonight. A judge issued a no-contact order that carries federal weight."

Tyler stood up slowly. His height seemed to fill the room, the boyish hesitation that had once defined him completely vanished, burned away by the monstrous reality of who raised him. "Tell the DA we will press every single charge to the maximum statutory penalty. Tell them I will testify against her in grand jury proceedings, in open court, or wherever they need me. She dies in a cell before she ever breathes the same air as my daughter."

"Understood," Reynolds said, offering a curt nod before slipping out of the room.

Owen stayed behind, his gaze softening as he looked at me. "The firm's security team is stationed at every entrance of this maternity ward, Claire. Nobody steps onto this floor without biometric clearance. Rest. Deliver that baby safely. We hold the line out here."

Before I could thank him, a sudden, horrifying flat tone blared from the fetal heart monitor. The steady *thump-thump-thump* degenerated into a slow, erratic crawl.

Dr. Evans bolted into the room, her eyes wide as she scanned the monitor. "Deceleration! Heart rate is down to seventy-five! The cord is compressed!"

Alarms wailed through the room. Four nurses swarmed the bed, yanking down the guard rails.

"We are converting to an emergency C-section right now!" Dr. Evans commanded, her calm facade shattering into pure adrenaline. "Prep the OR! Tyler, get into scrubs or stay out of the way! Move, move, move!"
