Chapter 21 - A Clean Table

Six months later, our backyard was alive with the sound of laughter, music, and the sizzle of an outdoor grill.
It was Maeve's half-birthday, but more than that, it was the summer barbecue we had always deserved. Strings of fairy lights hung between the sturdy branches of the old oak trees, casting a magical glow over two long wooden picnic tables covered in linen runners, bowls of fresh salads, artisanal burgers, and pitchers of iced tea.
Maya was sitting on a picnic blanket, helping Maeve practice sitting up. Maeve, now chubby-cheeked, bright-eyed, and giggling with delight, wore a yellow sunhat and slammed a wooden spoon rhythmically against a plastic bowl.
Owen was standing by the grill alongside Marcus, arguing good-naturedly over the proper temperature for searing steaks, while several neighbors from the community chatted warmly around the drink station.
I stood by the edge of the porch, holding a tray of freshly baked peach cobbler, watching the scene before me. This was what family was supposed to feel like. Not an arena of social status, conditional love, and vicious power plays, but a sanctuary of safety, joy, and mutual respect.
Tyler walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder. His hands were warm, grounding me in the reality we had built together from the ashes.
"Look at them," Tyler whispered, kissing my cheek. "No drama. No games. Just people who love each other."
"It’s peaceful," I said, leaning back into his embrace. "It feels like we finally arrived."

"We did," Tyler said with complete certainty. "The past is dead, Claire. Our life starts today."
We walked down the porch steps together, greeted by Maeve's delighted squeal as she saw us approaching. Tyler lifted her high into the air, spinning her around until her musical laughter echoed through the warm summer afternoon.
