Chapter 11 - A Nest Built on Truth

By week thirty-one of my pregnancy, the toxicity of the Mercer family felt like a distant storm that had passed over the mountain, leaving behind clean, fresh air.

The civil lawsuit was moving swiftly through pre-trial motions. Faced with overwhelming digital evidence and the testimony of her own colleagues, Denise’s legal team was practically begging Jenna for a closed-door settlement. But Jenna was unyielding. We demanded a formal, unedited public apology printed in the local Sunday paper, full restitution for all medical and legal fees, and a court-monitored protective order barring Denise from approaching within one thousand feet of me or my child for the next ten years.

Meanwhile, my own community had stepped forward to heal the wounds the Mercer family had inflicted.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, my living room was overflowing with pastel balloons, soft floral arrangements, and piles of brightly wrapped gifts. My college friends, my neighbors, and Owen’s coworkers had banded together to throw me the baby shower Denise had tried so hard to ruin.

"To the strongest mama in the state," Jenna said, raising a glass of sparkling cider toward me as everyone gathered around the dining table.

Laughter filled the room as I opened tiny soft onesies, handmade quilts, and books that would soon fill the shelves of our nursery. Owen had finished painting the room the previous weekend—a soft, warm cream with natural wood accents, exactly as I had always envisioned.

Tyler continued to send weekly updates through the legal parenting app. He had enrolled in mandatory anger management and individual therapy. He hadn't fought Jenna on a single legal petition; he conceded sole custody without contest, agreeing to every condition of supervised visitation that would begin only after the baby was six months old.

He was finally doing the work, not to win me back, but because he was beginning to understand the depth of his failure.

As the guests began to leave and the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of peach and lavender, I stood in the doorway of the nursery. The crib was dressed in white linen, a mobile of wooden stars hanging overhead.

For the first time in months, I felt completely, utterly at peace.

Until my phone chimed on the dresser.

It was an alert from the county clerk’s criminal filing system, sent directly to Jenna and forwarded to me with three red exclamation marks:
