Chapter 46 - The Black Ledger of Geneva

Tyler rushed to my side, sinking down on the wet planks and pulling off his jacket to press it tightly against the wound on my shoulder. His hands were shaking, not from weakness, but from the unbearable release of adrenaline.
"Hold this tight," he urged, his voice thick with emotion, pressing his forehead against mine as rain poured off the brim of his hair. "I've got you, Clara. I've got you. The Coast Guard is fifty yards out. Marcus has Maeve. She’s safe."
"The satchel, Tyler," I breathed through gritted teeth, ignoring the throbbing burn in my flesh. "Get the satchel before the tide takes it."
Tyler reached out with one arm, dragging the heavy leather bag onto the dry boards of the loading bay. Inside were not just bonds or passport covers, but three bound notebooks wrapped in waterproof oilcloth, along with a pair of encrypted flash drives bearing the seal of a defunct private bank in Zurich: *Banque De L'Hiver, 1989.*
Cutter Bravo nudged against the primary dock with a heavy thud of rubber bumpers. Tactical officers in blue foul-weather gear flooded the slipway, weapons raised, accompanied by Marcus, who came sprinting down the gangway carrying a navy wool blanket bundle.
"Clara! Tyler!" Marcus shouted over the din of the rain.
Beneath the heavy wool, tiny and warm, Maeve was wide awake, her blue eyes blinking up at the emergency floodlights without a single tear, her thumb securely tucked into her mouth. The sight of her broke the dam in my chest; hot tears spilled down my cheeks, washing away the blood and grit of the warehouse floor.
Tyler took her into his arms with an intensity that bordered on reverence, his bloody fingers careful not to touch her delicate cheeks, shielding her completely from the driving wind. "She’s whole," Tyler whispered, kissing her forehead over and over. "She's whole."
"Paramedics are right behind us," Marcus reported, kneeling beside me with a trauma kit to bandage my shoulder. "Denise and Thomas won't make the outer channel. Harbor patrol closed the sea gates at the narrows ten minutes ago. They're boxed in."
Agent Vance of the Federal Crimes Division stepped into the boathouse, flashing his gold shield as his agents fanned out across the crime scene. "Mr. Vanderberg, Ms. Davis. We have custody of the decoy wreckage on the bluff. We found the remote detonator frequencies on the local cell tower. Thomas Vanderberg’s digital signature is all over it. Attempted murder of a federal witness, domestic terrorism, conspiracy."
"Look at this first, Agent Vance," I said, pointing to the open satchel.
Vance knelt, carefully peeling back the oilcloth on the first notebook. His flashlight illuminated meticulous, handwritten entries detailing thirty years of shadow accounts, offshore trusts, and a sequence of illicit biological agreements drawn up between Julian, Thomas, and Denise in the summer of 1993.
"Julian didn't just hide Tyler's paternity," Tyler murmured, looking down at the yellowed pages while holding Maeve securely against his chest. "Thomas coerced him. Thomas had discovered that Julian had embezzled from the foundation's original endowment to pay off Denise's gambling debts in Monte Carlo. Thomas agreed to father an heir to keep the family line legally intact for the Swiss inheritance, on one condition."
"What condition?" Vance asked, photographing every page with a high-resolution evidence camera.
"That the day Tyler turned thirty, Julian would step down and transfer sole trusteeship of the global trust to Thomas," Tyler read from the agreement. "Julian refused when the time came. That was why Julian was poisoned on his yacht last year. Denise didn't act alone. Thomas gave her the cyanide compound."

A crack of thunder shook the boathouse roof. Across the bay, a brilliant red distress flare arced into the night sky, followed by the dull, hollow boom of an impact against the granite breakwater near the lighthouse.
The Harbor Patrol radio crackled through Agent Vance’s shoulder mic: *All units, target vessel has run aground on the South Shoals. Craft is taking on water. Suspects in the surf.*
