Chapter 7 - The Impossible Truth Revealed

Vincent’s fingers splayed out across Claire’s flat stomach, pressing ever so lightly through the soft fabric of her silk pajamas.
He didn't move. He didn't speak. His entire body had gone completely rigid, as if a live electrical current had just surged through him.
"Claire," Vincent whispered, his voice cracking slightly—a sound he had likely never made in his entire life. "What is this?"
Claire closed her eyes, hot tears spilling over her lashes and running down her cheeks. There was nowhere left to run. No more lies to hide behind.
"I'm pregnant," she whispered back, the words breaking the heavy silence of the night like shattering glass.
Vincent let out a harsh, disbelieving breath. He pulled his hand back as if her skin had burned him, taking a sharp step backward.
"Don't play games with me," Vincent growled, a dangerous edge returning to his voice. "You know my medical history. *Everyone* knows. It is biologically, medically impossible for me to father a child."
"I know!" Claire cried, stepping toward him, desperate for him to understand. "I pulled your medical files from Johns Hopkins today! I know about the azoospermia! I know what the doctors said!"
"Then why are you standing here lying to my face?!" Vincent roared, finally losing his legendary composure. The sound reverberated off the walls, shaking the very foundations of the room. "Who is the father, Claire?! Is it one of Vance's men? Was this part of the Moretti setup from the very beginning—to bring a bastard into my house and pass it off as mine?!"
"No!" Claire screamed back, her own fury flaring up to match his. She grabbed his large, calloused hand and slammed it back down against her stomach with desperate force. "Feel it! Feel me! There has never been anyone else, Vincent! Since the day I walked down that aisle, I have belonged to you, and only you! If your doctors were wrong, or if God decided to pull off a miracle, I don't care! This is *your* child!"
Vincent stared down at his hand resting against her womb. The rage in his eyes flickered, replaced by a deep, terrifying vortex of shock, confusion, and raw, primal protectiveness.
