Chapter 10 - A New Empire

Six months later, the Pacific sun was warm and golden, dipping slowly below the horizon to paint the ocean in brilliant shades of pink and orange.

Claire stood on the wooden deck of a beautiful, sun-drenched villa overlooking the sparkling blue waters of California, her hand resting comfortably over her very prominent, very undeniable baby bump.

Beside her, holding a small travel bag in one hand and a sleeping infant carrier in the other, stood Vincent Hale. Gone were the dark, heavy suits of the Pennsylvania underground; he wore a simple linen shirt, looking more like a devoted young father than a feared mafia kingpin.

"She's finally asleep," Vincent whispered with a soft smile, gently setting the carrier down on the patio table and stepping up behind Claire to wrap his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder.

"Emma is going to love it here," Claire smiled, looking out toward the horizon where her younger sister was currently splashing in the shallow waves of the Pacific Ocean for the very first time in her life.

"Let her enjoy it," Vincent murmured, pressing a soft kiss to the side of Claire’s neck. "She has all the time in the world now. Our debts are paid, the syndicate is restructured under federal protection, and Ashford is a lifetime away."

Claire turned in his arms, wrapping her arms around his neck and looking up into those familiar, fierce grey-green eyes—eyes that now held nothing but warmth, devotion, and unconditional love for his family.

"Everyone said you could never father a child," Claire teased softly, a playful smile touching her lips.

Vincent grinned, pulling her flush against him and pressing a deep, lingering kiss to her lips.

"Let them talk," Vincent whispered against her mouth. "They only know the empire I built. They don't know the miracle that saved it."

And as the golden California sun dipped below the ocean waves, lighting the path ahead of them, Claire knew that the most frightening part of marrying a mafia boss wasn't the wedding vows... it was finding out that fairy tales could come true in the darkest of places.
