Chapter 6 - The Midnight Confrontation

By midnight, the guests were gone, the mansion was locked down, and the estate had plunged into an eerie, suffocating quiet.
Claire sat on the edge of her bed in the master suite, her knees pulled up to her chest, trembling as she stared at the locked door connecting her room to Vincent's private quarters.
Every piece of the puzzle had fallen into place, and the picture was terrifying.
She wasn't just a forced bride married to a mafia boss. She was the unwitting pawn in a deadly proxy war between the Hales and the Morettis. Her father's bankruptcy, her mother's illness, the wedding at St. Jude's—it had all been orchestrated by Marcus Vance to infiltrate Vincent’s inner circle.
And now? She was carrying a child. A child that medical science said Vincent could never have.

The connecting door slowly swung open.
Vincent stepped into her room. He had removed his suit jacket and tie, his white shirt unbuttoned at the top. His expression was a mask of cold, terrifying granite. The air in the room suddenly felt entirely depleted of oxygen.
"You weren't at dinner for the rest of the night," Vincent said quietly, his voice like crushed ice. "Dante told me you weren't feeling well."
Claire swallowed hard, forcing herself to stand up and face him. She couldn't cower anymore. If she was going down, she would go down fighting.
"I heard you," Claire said, her voice shaking slightly, but holding its ground.
Vincent stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes narrowed instantly. "What did you say?"
"I heard you and Dante talking in the study," Claire said, her chin lifting defiantly as tears stung the backs of her eyes. "I heard about the Morettis. I heard about my father's company being a setup. You think I’m a spy. You think I was sent here to destroy you from the inside."
Vincent didn't deny it. He didn't yell. He simply closed the distance between them with slow, deliberate steps until he was towering over her.
"And were you?" Vincent asked softly, his gaze boring straight into her soul. "Did your father send his sweet, innocent nursing student daughter to play nursemaid to the monster of Pennsylvania?"
"No!" Claire cried, the emotion finally breaking through her defenses. "I didn't know! I swear to God, Vincent, I knew nothing about the Morettis! My father... he was drowning, he was crying, he was losing everything! I would never—I could never do that to you!"
Vincent reached out, his large, warm hand gripping her chin, forcing her to look directly into his piercing grey-green eyes. His thumb brushed over her quivering lower lip.
"You're a terrible liar, Claire," he murmured. "Or maybe... you're telling the exact truth."
"I am!" she sobbed, placing her hands against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful thrum of his heartbeat beneath his shirt. "I swear to you, I didn't know!"
Vincent stared down at her for a long, agonizing seconds, reading every micro-expression on her face. Then, his hand slid down from her chin, tracing a slow path down her neck, past her collarbone, until it came to a dead stop resting flat against her lower stomach.
Claire’s breath hitched. The room went dead silent.

Vincent’s hand froze against her abdomen. His eyes widened slightly as if he had just been struck by lightning.
