Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Syndicate

Vincent stopped inches away from her. He was taller by a full head, radiating a dangerous, magnetic heat. He reached out, his calloused thumb gently brushing against her cheekbone. The touch was deceptively tender, a stark contrast to the ruthless reputation that preceded him everywhere he went.

"Your skin is ice," Vincent noted, his eyes narrowing. "Are you sick?"

"No," Claire lied quickly, forcing a tight smile. "Just... a headache. The weather change, maybe."

Vincent’s gaze didn't leave her face. He was a man who interrogated informants and rival bosses for a living; he could smell a lie before it even left a person's lips. For a terrifying second, Claire thought he could hear the frantic rhythm of her heart hammering against her ribs.

Then, his phone buzzed on the nightstand inside the bedroom.

Vincent let out a low sigh, his thumb lingering on her cheek for a fraction of a second longer before he turned away. "Get back to bed, Claire. We have guests coming for dinner tonight. And I expect you to look... radiant."

As he walked back into the bedroom to answer the call, Claire let out a shaky breath that she felt like she’d been holding for an eternity.

She retreated to her own dressing room—they shared the suite, but Vincent rarely invaded her private sanctuary—and pulled out her laptop. If she was going to survive this, she needed information. Medical facts. Truths.

She logged into her student portal and accessed the restricted medical archives she had permission to view through her clinical rotation at the regional hospital, searching for the confidential files of high-profile patients linked to private security conglomerates like *Hale Global*.

It took an hour of frantic typing, bypassing secure firewalls using skills she had picked up from late-night tech forums in college, until she found it: Vincent Hale’s complete medical history from Johns Hopkins and the Mayo Clinic, dated six years ago.

The diagnosis was unyielding. *Azoospermia secondary to systemic infection. Permanent sterility. Zero probability of spontaneous reversal.*

Claire stared at the glowing blue screen, her hands trembling violently.

If the medical science was absolute, then how was she pregnant?

She reviewed the timeline. Four months of marriage. Four months of sharing a roof, sharing formal dinners, attending high-stakes charity galas where they played the part of the devoted newlyweds to perfection. And yes... sharing a bed.

Vincent had claimed her as his wife on paper, but in the beginning, he had kept his distance, respecting the forced nature of the union. It wasn't until month two, after a late-night gala where rival families had tried to corner Claire, that the lines had blurred. Vincent had stepped in, protecting her with a ferocious, primal intensity. That night, wrapped in the intoxicating haze of adrenaline and fear, the boundaries had shattered. They had been intimate multiple times since.

Claire clutched her stomach. *It’s his.* Biologically impossible or not, it was Vincent’s child.

Suddenly, a loud, heavy crash echoed from the downstairs foyer, followed by the sound of shouting men and the cold, unmistakable click of a loaded handgun being cocked.
