Chapter 3 - Blood in the Foyer

Claire slammed her laptop shut and bolted toward the balcony overlooking the grand foyer.
Downstairs, chaos had erupted. Three men in sleek black suits—guards from Vincent's inner security detail—were standing in a defensive semicircle around the marble staircase. Facing them was a man Claire recognized instantly from the dossiers Vincent kept locked in his private study: Marcus Vance.
Vance was the ruthless underboss of the rival Moretti syndicate out of Philadelphia. For months, a cold war had been brewing between the Hales and the Morettis over shipping ports along the Delaware River.
"Tell Vincent his time is running out!" Vance shouted, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. He had a bloody lip, and two of his guards were holding their sides, grooving from what looked like a brutal, silent brawl outside the gates. "We know about the shipments, and we know his grip on the council is slipping!"
Before the security guards could raise their weapons, a heavy, measured footstep sounded on the stairs.
Vincent was descending.
He hadn't bothered to put on a jacket; he wore a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, exposing the thick, corded muscles of his forearms. His expression was utterly devoid of emotion, which made him ten times more terrifying than if he had been screaming.
"Marcus," Vincent said softly, the single word cutting through the tension like a razor. "You seem to have forgotten how to knock. Or perhaps your mother forgot to teach you manners before she abandoned you to the streets."
Vance’s face flushed a furious crimson. "You think you’re untouchable, Hale? Everyone knows your empire is built on glass! Everyone knows you’re a dead end—a sterile king with no heir to pass his throne to! When you’re gone, the Hales die out, and we take everything!"
From her vantage point on the second-floor landing, Claire gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth.
Vance knew. The underworld didn't just suspect Vincent’s medical condition; they were actively using it as a weapon to undermine his authority, treating his lack of an heir as an open invitation for a bloody coup.
Vincent didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He simply walked down the remaining steps until he was standing a mere two feet away from Marcus Vance.
"My empire," Vincent whispered, his voice dripping with lethal calm, "is built on the blood of men who thought like you. And if you ever step foot on my property again, Marcus, you won't leave in an ambulance. You’ll leave in a garbage bag."
The sheer weight of Vincent’s presence forced Vance to take a hesitant step backward.
"You'll pay for this, Hale!" Vance snarled, turning on his heel and storming out through the massive oak double doors, his guards trailing nervously behind him.
The heavy doors slammed shut. Silence descended on the foyer once more.
Vincent stood motionless at the foot of the stairs for a long, agonizing moment. Then, slowly, he tilted his head upward.

His grey-green eyes locked directly onto Claire, who was still frozen on the landing above.
