Chapter 4 - The Dinner Party Trap That Went Wrong

That evening, the grand dining room of the Hale estate was lit by the soft, flickering glow of dozens of crystal candles.
The dinner was a high-stakes chess match disguised as a social gathering. Seated around the massive mahogany table were six of the most influential power players in Pennsylvania: city councilmen, senior judges on the federal bench, and heads of allied shipping cartels.
Claire sat at the opposite end of the long table, dressed in a stunning emerald-green velvet gown that hugged her slender curves. She looked every bit the polished, elegant mafia queen. But beneath the table, her hands were clenched into tight fists, her stomach rolling with morning sickness that she was fighting tooth and nail to suppress.
"To new alliances," Judge Harrison raised his crystal glass of vintage Bordeaux, smiling smoothly across the table. "And to the continued strength of the Hale family. Though, Vincent... people are starting to wonder about the future. An empire without an heir is a ticking clock."
The table went deadly quiet. Even the clinking of silverware stopped.
It was a deliberate provocation. Harrison was testing Vincent, pushing on the most vulnerable bruise in the Hale syndicate.
Vincent didn't break eye contact with the judge. He slowly set down his fork, the metallic scrape sounding like a guillotine dropping in the quiet room.
"My empire," Vincent said, his voice smooth and lethally composed, "does not rely on biological accidents, Judge. It relies on absolute loyalty. And loyalty is something money can't buy, but betrayal can certainly pay for."
Harrison swallowed hard, offering a strained, nervous smile. "Of course. Just... friendly neighborhood concern."
Claire watched Vincent closely. She saw the subtle tightening of his jaw, the way his knuckles turned white as he gripped the stem of his glass. He knew as well as anyone that the rumors of his sterility were chipping away at his control over the syndicate. Every day he went without an heir, his enemies grew bolder.
And yet... *she* was carrying a child.
Her child. *Their* child.
If she told him now, in front of these vultures, would he believe her? Or would he think she was playing a dangerous game, working for a rival faction to plant a fake heir and tear his empire apart from the inside out?
Suddenly, a wave of intense nausea hit Claire like a physical blow. The rich smell of roasted lamb and heavy wine turned her stomach inside out.
She pushed her chair back abruptly, the legs scraping loudly against the hardwood floor.
All eyes at the table snapped instantly toward her.
"Excuse me," Claire managed to choke out, her face draining of all color.

Without waiting for permission, she turned and bolted from the dining room toward the private powder room down the hall, leaving a trail of stunned silence behind her.
