Chapter 5 - The Discovery in the Study

Inside the marble-tiled bathroom, Claire dropped to her knees in front of the toilet, vomiting violently until her throat burned and tears streamed down her cheeks.

When the wave finally subsided, she leaned back against the cool wall, panting for breath.

"This is impossible to hide," she whispered to herself, wiping her mouth with a tissue. "If I don't tell him soon, my body will betray me."

She stood up, washed her face, and tried to compose herself. As she stepped out of the powder room, she realized she had taken a wrong turn in the sprawling west wing of the mansion. Instead of heading back toward the dining room, she had wandered into the private hallway leading to Vincent’s high-security home office—the one place in the house she was strictly forbidden to enter without an escort.

The heavy oak door to the study was cracked open by an inch. A warm bar of yellow light spilled out onto the dark Persian runner.

Claire hesitated. She should turn around and walk away.

Then, she heard her own name.

"—Claire Bennett."

It was Dante, Vincent’s fiercely loyal underboss and head of security.

Claire froze, pressing her back against the wall beside the door frame, straining her ears to listen.

"Boss," Dante’s voice continued, sounding uncharacteristically tense. "We ran a background check on her father's debts like you asked. The construction company collapse wasn't an accident. It was orchestrated by the Moretti family. They forced Daniel Bennett into that corner so he would have no choice but to come to you."

Inside the room, Vincent was silent for a long moment. When he finally spoke, his voice was chillingly soft.

"You’re saying her father didn't just stumble into my debt... he was *pushed*?"

"Yes," Dante replied. "The Morettis wanted a plant inside your house. They thought Claire would be a naive nursing student they could use to spy on your shipping routes."

Claire’s breath caught in her throat. The room seemed to tilt violently.

*A plant? A spy?*

Her father hadn't just fallen into debt—he had been manipulated by the Morettis to marry her off to Vincent as a Trojan horse.

"And Claire?" Vincent asked, his voice dropping an octave, becoming dangerously cold. "Does she know?"

"We don't think so," Dante answered carefully. "She genuinely believes her family was just drowning in medical bills. But boss... what are we going to do with her? If the Morettis are using her as a pawn—"

"Enough," Vincent interrupted, his tone final and absolute. "Leave us."

Footsteps approached the door from the inside.

Panic surged through Claire. If Vincent caught her eavesdropping—finding out not only that she was pregnant with an 'impossible' child, but that her entire family had been a setup orchestrated by his worst enemies—he would destroy her on the spot.

Claire turned and bolted down the dark hallway just as the heavy study door clicked open behind her.
