Chapter 9 - The Ghost in the Mansion

Celeste’s face instantly went sheet-white. Her eyes darted toward the hidden corridor behind the study bookshelf—a private panic room and archive vault that even the board of directors didn't know existed.
"Who’s in there, Celeste?" I asked, my heart skipping a beat as I backed away toward the door.
"No one," Celeste stammered, stepping in front of the bookshelf. "Get out of my house, Elena. You’ve won. Just leave!"
Before I could answer, the heavy wooden bookshelf slowly swung outward on hidden hinges.
A figure stepped out from the shadows of the vault.
He wasn't in a holding cell. He wasn't wearing handcuffs.
Adrian Vale stood before us in a simple black sweater and dark jeans, looking entirely calm, entirely collected, and dangerously unbothered by the fact that the federal government thought he was locked behind bars twenty miles away.
"Hello, darling," Adrian smiled, his voice smooth and dripping with sick amusement. "I told you... empires aren't built on paper. They’re built on control."
I froze. Every instinct in my body screamed to run, but my feet felt glued to the floorboards.
"You... you were supposed to be in jail," I whispered, my voice shaking despite my best efforts to keep it steady.
Adrian chuckled softly, walking slowly toward me across the Persian rug. "Jail is for people who don't own the judges, Elena. A decoy in a holding cell, a few well-placed bribes, and a private subterranean exit from the precinct. Do you really think a billionaire’s empire crumbles just because the media throws a tantrum?"
Marcus burst through the front door a second later, panting wildly, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker. "Elena! I called the cops—" He stopped dead in his tracks as he saw Adrian standing there.
"Ah, the loyal lawyer," Adrian smiled coldly, his eyes never leaving mine. "You really thought you outsmarted me, didn't you? You thought you could strip my company, humiliate my family, and walk away into the sunset with forty million dollars of my shorted stock."
"You're insane," I spat back, refusing to cower. "The whole world knows what you did. The evidence is already in federal hands!"
"Evidence can be stolen. Whisteblowers can... disappear," Adrian said smoothly, his smile turning razor-sharp. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, sleek electronic device.
With a single click, every light in the mansion clicked off, plunging the grand study into total darkness, save for the pale moonlight filtering through the French windows.

"And as for you, Elena," Adrian’s voice whispered from the darkness, echoing all around us. "You are still my wife. Under the law, and under my roof."
