Chapter 8 - The Matriarch’s Secret

Celeste Vale thought she was untouchable. For forty years, she had played the role of the immaculate philanthropist, the benevolent patron of the arts, and the untouchable queen mother of Vale Meridian Holdings. Behind closed doors, she was the architect of every psychological trap Adrian had ever deployed. She was the one who taught him how to break a person's spirit without leaving a mark on their bones.

By 2:00 AM, Marcus and I weren't in a police station or a safehouse. We were parked outside the sprawling, gated iron entry of the Vale family estate in the exclusive hills overlooking the city.

The sprawling European-style mansion was dark, save for a dim light burning in the ground-floor study.

"Elena, breaking onto private Vale property after a shooting incident is literal suicide," Marcus whispered from the driver's seat, gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were white. "If private security doesn't shoot us, the local cops will arrest us for trespassing."

"We're not breaking in, Marcus," I replied, pulling a small, legal document from my handbag. "We're serving a subpoena."

I stepped out of the car, walking right up to the heavy iron security gates. I pressed the intercom button. A harsh, electronic buzz echoed through the night.

"Private property. State your business," a gruff voice answered through the speaker.

"Tell Celeste Vale that Elena Vance is at her front gate with a federal asset-seizure notice for her personal bank accounts, her art collection, and her primary residence," I said clearly into the microphone. "Tell her she has two minutes to open the gate, or I forward the audio recordings of her orchestrating the 2015 tax evasion scandal directly to the IRS."

Silence stretched across the intercom. One minute passed. Then, the heavy iron gates groaned mechanically and slowly swung inward.

I didn't hesitate. I walked right up the winding stone driveway, my bare feet striking the cold pavement, head held high.

When I reached the grand mahogany front door, it was already open. Standing in the foyer was Celeste Vale.

She wasn't wearing her pearls or her white gloves. She wore a silk dressing gown, her hair loose around her shoulders, looking older, smaller, and infinitely more fragile than she had at the cathedral. But her eyes still burned with that familiar, toxic pride.

"You have a lot of nerve coming here after what you did to my son," Celeste hissed, stepping back to let me enter the grand foyer.

"Your son tried to have me killed an hour ago, Celeste," I replied, stepping past her into the warm, opulent hallway. "So spare me the maternal dramatics."

Celeste flinched slightly, though she masked it quickly. "Adrian is in a holding cell. He couldn't possibly—"

"Adrian has a network of loyal attack dogs who follow orders without asking questions," I interrupted, turning to face her. "Just like you taught him."

I walked over to the mahogany desk in her private study, pulled out a thick envelope, and tossed it onto the polished wood surface right in front of her.

"What is this?" Celeste demanded, her voice trembling slightly.

"It’s your ticket out of total ruin," I said quietly. "Julian signed over his shares. Adrian is facing twenty years. The board has dissolved the company. You are completely alone, Celeste. The government is coming for every penny tied to Vale Meridian, including the hidden accounts registered under your maiden name."

Celeste stared at the envelope, her breath catching in her throat. "You... you want to take everything from me? My home? My legacy?"

"I want what you took from me," I said, stepping close enough that she could see the absolute resolve in my eyes. "My dignity, my safety, and my peace of mind."

Before Celeste could speak, a sudden, sharp sound echoed from the dark hallway behind the study.
