Chapter 7 - The Escape Plan

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second as police cruisers converged on the financial district. Glass crunched beneath our shoes as Marcus hauled me up by the arm, dragging me toward the reinforced emergency stairwell at the back of the office suite.
"Move, Elena! Now!" Marcus yelled over the screaming alarms.
We slammed through the heavy metal fire door, tumbling into the concrete stairwell. We didn't take the elevator—in a corporate assassination attempt, elevators were steel coffins. We ran downward, flight after flight, my designer heels snapping off on the third landing, leaving me to sprint in bare, stockinged feet against the hard concrete.
"Are you hit?" Marcus panted, checking me over as we hit the tenth floor.
"No! Just keep moving!" I shouted back, adrenaline overriding the pain in my feet.
Adrian hadn't just lost his mind; he had crossed the absolute Rubicon. By sending a sniper to a high-rise office in the middle of downtown, he had proved that he preferred to see me dead rather than free and victorious. The Vale family’s grip on power wasn't just corporate—it was syndicate-level ruthless.
When we finally burst out onto the ground-floor loading dock at the back of the building, a swarm of police cars had already surrounded the block. Red and blue lights strobed wildly across the wet asphalt, casting chaotic shadows against the brick walls.
Officer-in-charge, a weathered detective with a tactical vest, rushed toward us with his hand on his holster.
"Stay back! Keep your hands where I can see them!" the detective barked.
"Detective, I am Elena Vance! The whistleblower who brought down Vale Meridian!" I shouted, holding up my hands while flashing my ID badge with my other hand. "The shooter is across the street in a black sedan! They just fired through my office window!"
The detective’s eyes widened. He spun around, shouting orders into his shoulder radio. "All units, intercept a black sedan moving southbound on Grand Avenue! Suspect is armed and dangerous!"
Within seconds, half a dozen police cruisers peeled out from the curb, sirens screaming into the night, tearing down the boulevard in pursuit of the phantom car.
Marcus leaned against a brick pillar, gasping for air, clutching his chest. "Jesus Christ, Elena... they tried to kill us. In broad daylight—well, midnight, but still—in the middle of the city."
"They’re desperate, Marcus," I said, my voice dangerously calm as I stared down at my torn stockings and bruised feet. The physical marks Adrian had left on my body were fading, but the battle lines were now permanent. "Desperate men make mistakes."
"Mistakes? That wasn't a mistake, that was a declaration of war!" Marcus argued. "You need federal protective custody. Right now. We go to a safehouse."
"No safehouse," I replied, shaking my head firmly. "If I hide in a government hole, Adrian wins. He wants me terrified, isolated, and running."
"Then what do your brilliant plans suggest we do?" Marcus asked, exasperated.
I looked up at the glittering skyline of the city where the Vale family had ruled like gods for half a century.

"We take away his last remaining asset," I said softly. "His mother."
