Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Checkmate

The darkness in the study was suffocating. I could hear Marcus breathing heavily near the doorway, and the faint rustle of Celeste’s silk gown as she backed away in sheer terror. She had created a monster, and now the monster was loose in his own house.
"You can't touch me, Adrian," I called out into the dark, keeping my voice steady, projecting confidence I didn't entirely feel. "The DOJ has copies of every file. Even if you kill me, the bomb goes off."
A low, mocking laugh echoed from the corner of the room. A soft click sounded, and a single desk lamp flickered back on, casting a harsh, yellow pool of light over Adrian. He stood there holding a satellite-encrypted laptop.
"You think I care about the DOJ anymore?" Adrian smiled, pulling up a live interface on the screen. "Vale Meridian is dead. I killed it myself three hours ago. All the fraudulent assets, the shell companies, the illegal offshore accounts—I transferred them legally under a defunct foreign NGO controlled by my uncle Julian."
My breath hitched. "You liquidated your own company?"
"I burned it to the ground so you couldn't have the ashes," Adrian said calmly. "And now? Now, you and I are going on a very long, very private trip. No phones, no lawyers, no whistleblowers."
He reached behind his back, his hand sliding inside his jacket.
Before he could pull out whatever weapon he was reaching for, the front windows of the mansion suddenly exploded inward with a deafening crash.
Glass shattered everywhere.
"FBI! FEDERAL AGENTS! DOWN ON THE GROUND!"
A blinding wall of tactical flashlights flooded the study, turning the dark room into broad daylight. Half a dozen heavily armed federal SWAT operatives swarmed through the shattered windows and doorways, their rifles leveled directly at Adrian Vale.
Agent Vance stepped into the center of the room, his badge gleaming in the tactical light.
"Adrian Vale, you are under arrest—for real this time," Agent Vance announced, stepping forward with heavy steel cuffs in his hands.
Adrian froze. His face went slack with absolute shock. He looked around wildly, realizing his subterranean escape route had been sealed, his decoy cell discovered, and his network dismantled from the inside out.
"How... how did you find me?" Adrian whispered, his voice cracking.
I stepped out from the shadows of the desk, walking slowly into the pool of light, looking directly into his terrified eyes.
"Did you really think I trusted the DOJ to handle a billionaire with your reach?" I smiled coldly, holding up my phone, which was streaming a live, encrypted GPS ping directly to the federal attorney general's personal device. "While you were busy playing games in the dark, Marcus wasn't calling the cops. He was syncing your satellite laptop’s IP address the second you turned on your encrypted hotspot."
Adrian lunged forward with a roar of pure, feral rage, but three SWAT operatives tackled him instantly to the floor, pinning his face against the Persian rug as they slammed the heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists.
Celeste screamed, collapsing onto the sofa in a sobbing heap.
As they dragged Adrian past me toward the shattered French windows, he looked up, his eyes bloodshot and filled with absolute defeat.
"You're a demon, Elena," he spat, blood trickling from his lip.
"No, Adrian," I replied softly, stepping aside as the federal agents hauled him out into the night air where dozens of police cruisers flashed their brilliant red and blue lights.
