Chapter 6 - Eyes in the Dark

My blood ran cold.

I dropped the letter onto the mahogany desk. Marcus was instantly on his feet, rounding the desk to read the words over my shoulder. His face lost all its color.

"Security!" Marcus barked into the intercom. "Lock down the building! No one in or out!"

"Mr. Vance, what's happening?" the receptionist's voice crackled, laced with panic.

"Call the police!" Marcus shouted. "We have a potential security breach—"

Before he could finish the sentence, the lights in the entire penthouse office flickered violently, then clicked off completely.

The amber glow of the city skyline remained, casting long, eerie shadows across the room.

"Marcus," I whispered, grabbing his arm. "Get down."

We dropped low behind the heavy mahogany desk. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Adrian was in a holding cell twenty miles away—or so the police had told us. But men with billions of dollars don't play by normal rules. They have contingencies, private guards, and loyalists embedded everywhere.

Or... it was a bluff. A final, desperate psychological trick to terrify me.

"Look," Marcus pointed toward the floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

Across the wide, rain-slicked boulevard, directly opposite the entrance of the high-rise, a black sedan was idling by the curb. Its headlights were off. But in the backseat, through the tinted glass, a single interior light clicked on for just a fraction of a second.

Inside the car, a figure sat motionless. A man in a dark suit. He was holding a phone up to his ear.

My phone, sitting right on the desk, lit up.

An incoming call from an unknown number.

I stared at the screen, paralyzed.

"Don't answer it," Marcus breathed, his hand reaching for his own phone to dial 911. "I've got the police on the line. SWAT is dispatching a unit to the perimeter."

"He wants me to know he's watching," I whispered, the adrenaline surging through my veins, pushing past the terror and igniting a cold, fierce anger. "If I cower now, he wins."

I snatched my phone off the desk before Marcus could stop me and swiped to answer. I didn't say hello. I just pressed it to my ear.

"I see you, Adrian," I said into the dead silence of the phone line.

A low, raspy chuckle echoed from the speaker. But it wasn't Adrian's voice.

"Mr. Vale sends his regards," a gravelly, unfamiliar voice rumbled on the other end. "And he asked me to deliver a message in person."

Before I could process the words, a deafening *CRACK* shattered the night air.

A high-powered rifle bullet tore through the double-pane glass window of the penthouse office, burying itself deeply into the wooden bookcase inches from where Marcus and I crouched. Glass showered over us like glittering diamonds.

"Get down! Active shooter!" Marcus screamed, dragging me hard against the floor as alarms began to blare throughout the entire building.
