Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Family

"Is that a threat, Julian?" I asked, keeping my voice perfectly steady, devoid of the fear he expected to hear.
"It’s a fact," Julian’s voice echoed through the car speakers, cold and calculated. "Adrian is a fool. He let his temper ruin a multi-billion-dollar merger. But Adrian is a family member. You? You’re an outsider who wandered into a den of wolves and decided to bite the alpha. You think the DOJ is going to protect you forever? Federal judges retire, Elena. Investigations get buried. But the Vale family footprint... that’s permanent."
Marcus shot me a warning glance, mouthing, *Trace the call.* I nodded subtly, keeping Julian talking.
"Your family footprint is currently being dismantled by federal agents as we speak, Julian," I countered, leaning back against the leather seat. "Celeste is probably having a panic attack in the vestry, Adrian is sitting in a holding cell wondering why his expensive lawyers aren't answering his calls, and your offshore accounts in Zurich are about to be frozen by international regulators."
A sharp intake of breath hissed through the phone line. That caught him off guard. Julian had assumed I only had dirt on Adrian. He didn't realize I had mapped the entire family syndicate.
"You think you’ve won because you released a few stolen files to the press?" Julian chuckled darkly, though the sound lacked its previous confidence. "You don't understand how the real world works, little girl. Corporations don't fall because of morals. They fall because of power. And right now, I still have all the power that matters."
"If you had the power, Julian, you wouldn't be calling me on a burner phone trying to cut a backroom deal," I replied sharply. "You’re terrified. Because you know that when Adrian starts singing to save himself from a twenty-year federal sentence, your name is going to be the first one he drops."
Silence stretched across the line for several long seconds. The only sound was the faint hum of traffic outside the town car.
"What do you want, Elena?" Julian finally asked, dropping the bravado. The predator had realized he was caught in his own trap.
"I want total immunity from any countersuits from the Vale family," I stated clearly. "I want full relinquishment of any claims to my personal assets. And most importantly... I want Vale Meridian Holdings dissolved and liquidated, with the remaining humanitarian funds redirected to the communities your factories poisoned."
Julian let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "You’re asking for the impossible. That’s billions of dollars. That’s generations of legacy."
"It’s a choice, Julian," I said, my voice dropping an octave, carrying the full weight of eleven months of psychological torment. "You sign the papers by midnight tonight, or I release the audio files of you and Adrian discussing the silencing of the whistleblowers in the 2018 industrial spill. Let’s see how the jury likes your legacy then."
I didn't wait for his answer. I tapped the screen and hung up.
Marcus let out a long whistle, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. "Damn, Elena. You didn't just burn the bridge; you nuked the river."
"The river was toxic anyway," I said, staring out the window as the town car merged onto the highway.
My phone buzzed again immediately. A text message from an encrypted number.
*“Papers will be delivered to your legal counsel by 10:00 PM. You win.”*

I looked at the screen, a cold satisfaction washing over me. But even as the adrenaline faded, a chilling thought lingered in the back of my mind. People like Julian and Adrian don't just surrender. They regroup. And somewhere out there, Adrian was sitting in a holding cell, plotting his revenge.
