Chapter 3 - The Queen’s Gambit

The black town car idling at the curb wasn't part of the Vale wedding fleet. It belonged to Marcus Vance—no relation to me, but an old-school corporate restructuring lawyer who made sharks look like goldfish.
I pulled open the door and slid into the leather-lined interior. Marcus was sitting there with a tablet in his hand, a cup of black coffee steaming beside him. He took one look at my ivory dress, the fading bruises on my arms, and the titanium USB drive I placed on the center console.
"I watched the livestream," Marcus said, a slow, appreciative grin spreading across his face. "Magnificent execution, Elena. Wall Street hasn't seen a hit like that since the dot-com crash."
"It's only phase one, Marcus," I said, leaning back and letting out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for eleven months. "Is the media package holding?"
"Holding? It’s dominating," Marcus tapped his tablet, spinning it around to show me the trending metrics. `#ValeEmpireFall` was the number one global trend on Twitter. Videos of Adrian getting cravat-dragged out of Saint Jude Cathedral were pulling in five million views every ten minutes. "The board of directors is already holding an emergency meeting. They’re panicking. They want to distance themselves from Adrian before the markets open tomorrow morning."
"They won't be able to distance themselves," I replied, grabbing the coffee cup and taking a sip. "Every single member of that board signed off on the fraudulent acquisitions in sector four. I have their digital signatures stamped and timestamped."
Marcus whistled softly. "You’ve got the whole house of cards, Elena. But what about you? The moment Adrian’s defense lawyers realize you’re the whistleblower, they’re going to come after you with every legal weapon they have. Prenup clauses, NDA violations, defamation suits—you name it."
"Let them try," I said, my voice ice-cold. "Adrian made me sign a prenuptial agreement under extreme duress. I have audio recordings of him threatening to ruin my family if I didn't sign away my independent assets. Under federal law, a contract signed under coercion is null and void."
"You recorded him?" Marcus laughed, shaking his head. "Remind me never to get on your bad side, Elena."
"You're my lawyer, Marcus. As long as your retainer is paid, you're safe."
"Speaking of retainers... where is the funding coming from? Adrian froze all your personal accounts three months ago, didn't he?"
I smiled, unlocking my phone and pulling up a banking app that Marcus hadn't seen yet. "Adrian thought he was controlling my spending by cutting off my cards. He didn't realize that for the past six months, I’ve been quietly shorting Vale Meridian Holdings stock using a blind corporate trust registered under my maiden name."
Marcus stared at the screen. The numbers rolled over with a satisfying green glow.
"You shorted your own wedding stock?" Marcus whispered, his eyes wide. "Elena... that’s insider trading territory if you aren't careful."
"Not when the trades are executed by an independent algorithmic hedge fund based in Zurich, based on publicly available environmental audit discrepancies that I legally submitted to the EPA three weeks ago," I corrected smoothly. "I just made forty-two million dollars on the collapse of my fiancé's empire."
Before Marcus could reply, my phone buzzed violently.
An incoming call from an unknown, restricted number.
I looked at Marcus. He nodded grimly and tapped a recording device onto the back of my phone.
I swiped to answer.
May you like
"Elena," a low, gravelly voice hissed through the speaker. It wasn't Adrian. It was Julian Vance—Adrian’s ruthless uncle and the hidden power broker behind Vale Meridian’s shadow operations. "You’ve made a catastrophic mistake."
