Chapter 5 - Sloane’s Golden Parachute

The VIP suite on the eighth floor of Mount Sinai Medical Center smelled of fresh white lilies and expensive French perfume.

Sloane Vance was sitting propped up in the adjustable hospital bed, wearing a four-hundred-dollar silk robe from La Perla. On the rolling tray table beside her sat an untouched tray of hospital food, pushed aside in favor of a fresh acai bowl and an iced matcha latte brought in by her personal assistant twenty minutes earlier.

Her smartphone was buzzing incessantly against the marble-topped bedside table.

Text messages were rolling in by the hundreds:

*Sloane, have you seen Twitter?!*

*Turn on CNBC right now!*

*Are you okay? What did Grant do?!*

*Delete your Instagram immediately!*

Sloane frowned, picking up the phone with her manicured fingers. She tapped the screen, opening the bird app.

The top three trending topics in the United States made her heart stop:

1. **#LeftOnTheIsland** (412K posts)

2. **#GrantCaldwell** (289K posts)

3. **#SloaneVance** (195K posts)

Her thumb trembled as she clicked the third hashtag.

The first post that appeared was a pristine, high-resolution clip of the Halcyon Cay tarmac footage. It had already been viewed 4.2 million times in the forty-five minutes since the Caldwell Hospitality board meeting ended.

Someone had looped the final three seconds of the video: Sloane sitting inside the helicopter, looking through the rain-streaked window, smiling directly into the camera while Olivia stood abandoned on the tarmac.

The caption beneath it, posted by a major business news aggregator, read:

> *"The face of corporate sociopathy. Meet Sloane Vance, the Caldwell Hospitality executive who took the final evacuation seat from the company’s owner during a Category 5 hurricane—and smiled while doing it."*

The comments below the video were a tidal wave of vitriol:

— *"She looks like an absolute demon."*

— *"This woman took the last flight and smirked at the wife left to die?! Put her in prison!"*

— *"Cancel every brand associated with this monster."*

— *"Look at her smile. She thought she was stepping into a billionaire lifestyle. Hope she enjoys federal prison."*

"What... what is this?" Sloane gasped, her voice shrill in the quiet hospital room. "How did they get this footage?!"

She furiously dialed Grant’s private cell phone.

*The number you have dialed has been disconnected or is no longer in service.*

"No, no, no," she muttered, her breathing turning shallow. She dialed Arthur Pendelton.

It went straight to voicemail: *The mailbox is full and cannot accept new messages.*

The heavy oak door of the VIP suite swung open without a knock.

Sloane snapped her head up, expecting Grant to burst in, breathless and ready to whisk her away to their private compound on Star Island.

Instead, a woman walked in.

She was roughly thirty-five years old, dressed in an impeccably tailored charcoal trouser suit, carrying an ultra-slim leather briefcase. Her dark hair was cut into a razor-sharp bob, and her amber eyes were as warm as an ice pick.

Behind her walked two uniformed officers from the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Financial Crimes Division.

"Sloane Vance?" the woman asked, consulting a digital tablet in her hand.

Sloane pulled the silk robe tightly around her chest, instinctively shrinking back into the hospital pillows. "Who are you? You can't be in here! This is a private suite! I’m a patient recovering from a high-risk pregnancy emergency!"

The woman let out a short, dry chuckle that held zero humor.

"My name is Elena Cruz," she said, stepping to the foot of the bed. "I am the Chief Forensic Investigator for the Sterling Grace Charitable Trust. And as for your high-risk pregnancy emergency... Dr. Robert Sterling, Chief of Obstetrics at this hospital and a second cousin of Olivia Caldwell, personally reviewed your admission ultrasound twenty minutes ago."

Elena looked up from her tablet, her gaze pinning Sloane to the mattress.

"You aren't in medical distress, Miss Vance. You have never been in medical distress. In fact, according to the ultrasound data transferred to our legal team, you aren't even eight weeks pregnant. You are barely five weeks along."

Sloane’s face went chalk white. "That's private medical information! That's a HIPAA violation! I will sue this entire hospital!"

"You won't sue anyone, Miss Vance," Elena said smoothly, opening her briefcase and pulling out a sheaf of legal documents bound with blue ribbon. "Because you are currently being served with a temporary restraining order, an asset freeze injunction from the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida, and a federal grand jury subpoena."

Elena dropped the thick stack of papers directly onto Sloane’s lap, right on top of her La Perla silk robe.

"What is this?" Sloane whispered, her voice shaking violently as she stared at the legal documents.

"That," Elena said, "is the accounting of your life for the past eighteen months. Let's review the highlights, shall we?"

Elena tapped her tablet screen.

"Item one: The four-bedroom penthouse on Brickell Key, leased under the corporate shell entity 'Vance Strategic Holdings.' The lease was paid directly from Caldwell Hospitality operational accounts under invoices marked 'Offsite Executive Marketing.' That lease was terminated one hour ago. The building management is currently placing your designer shoes, your handbags, and your luggage into industrial trash bags and depositing them on the curb."

"You can't do that!" Sloane shrieked, tears of rage finally spilling over her mascara. "Grant signed that lease! He's the CEO!"

"Grant Caldwell was removed as CEO at ten-fifteen this morning," Elena replied without missing a beat. "He is currently sitting in a holding cell at the Miami-Dade Federal Detention Center, awaiting a bail hearing for wire fraud and reckless endangerment."

Sloane gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "Holding cell?!"

"Item two," Elena continued relentlessly. "The black Mercedes G-Wagon registered to your corporate name: currently being loaded onto a flatbed tow truck outside this hospital. Item three: Your corporate American Express Centurion card: canceled. Item four: The one point eight million dollars transferred to your personal account at First Republic Bank from the Halcyon renovation contingency fund: frozen by federal court order under the Racketeer Influencer and Corrupt Organizations Act."

Elena leaned over the foot of the bed, her eyes narrowing until they looked like twin blades.

"You thought you were playing a high-stakes game of chess, Miss Vance. You thought you could seduce a weak, narcissistic man, convince him to leave his wife to die in a hurricane, and step directly into a five-hundred-million-dollar dynasty."

"I love him!" Sloane cried out, her voice cracking. "Grant loves me! He's the father of my baby!"

Elena Cruz looked at her with pure, unadulterated pity.

"Is he?" Elena asked softly.

Sloane froze. Every muscle in her body locked up. The tears on her cheeks seemed to congeal.

Elena tapped the tablet one more time, turning the screen so Sloane could see it.

Displayed on the screen was a series of high-resolution surveillance photographs taken three weeks earlier outside the Faena Hotel in Miami Beach.

In the photographs, Sloane was not with Grant Caldwell.

She was standing on a private balcony, wrapped in the arms of a tall, silver-haired man with the predatory posture of a corporate raider: Julian Croft, the Managing Partner of Apex Capital Group—the very hedge fund attempting the hostile takeover of Caldwell Hospitality.

In the third photograph, Sloane was kissing Julian Croft on the lips while holding a confidential operational dossier bearing the Sterling Grace Trust watermark.

"Did Grant know that while you were whispering promises in his ear about your future family, you were feeding internal board memos to Apex Capital?" Elena asked, her voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "Did he know that Julian Croft promised you a five-million-dollar finder’s fee if Grant executed the merger agreement during Olivia’s 'absence'?"

Sloane couldn't speak. Her chest heaved; her throat made a wet, choking sound.

"And more importantly," Elena whispered, leaning in until she was inches from Sloane’s terrified face, "whose child are you actually carrying, Sloane? Grant’s? Or Julian Croft’s?"

The silence in the hospital room was deafening. The only sound was the rhythmic beeping of the heart rate monitor behind the bed, which had accelerated to a frantic, erratic tempo.

The two police officers stepped forward.

"Sloane Vance," the lead officer said, unhooking a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt. "You are under arrest for corporate espionage, grand theft, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Get out of the bed."

"I'm... I'm sick," Sloane whimpered, clutching the blanket, looking around the room like a trapped animal. "I need my doctor! I'm pregnant!"

"The attending physician has cleared you for transport to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center," the officer stated flatly. "You have thirty seconds to stand up on your own, or we will assist you."

Sloane looked down at her hands. Her diamonds, her French manicure, her silk robe—everything she had traded her soul to secure—felt like lead weights dragging her down into an abyss.

Outside the hospital window, the rain from the outer bands of the hurricane beat against the glass.

She had smiled through the helicopter window at Olivia Caldwell less than twenty-four hours ago.

Now, as the cold steel of the handcuffs clicked around her wrists, Sloane Vance finally realized what Olivia had known all along:

The storm hadn't ended when the helicopter took off.

May you like

It had only just begun.
