Chapter 39 - The Golden Dawn

The heavy tactical boots of federal law enforcement pounded outside the bunker.
Flash-bangs detonated in the distance as the final pockets of Sterling mercenaries surrendered. Within moments, the bunker door was breached by federal marshals in full body armor, their weapons raised.
"Federal agents! Put your hands in the air!"
Kaelen immediately lowered his rifle, raising his hands, his private military contractor clearance badge pinned visibly to his tactical vest.
I stood motionless, my chin raised, watching as two agents grabbed Sloane from the floor, wrenching her arms behind her back and snapping heavy steel cuffs onto her wrists. She didn't fight back; her eyes were dead, staring blankly at the floor as her gilded life evaporated into a federal indictment.
"Julian Vance, you are under arrest for corporate espionage, grand treason, conspiracy to commit murder, and financial fraud," another agent barked, pinning Julian to the concrete floor.
"No! Wait! My wife! Ask my wife!" Julian shrieked, kicking wildly as the zip-ties bit into his wrists. "Elena! Tell them! Tell them I was coerced! Elena, look at me! Look at me!"
I turned my back on him.
I walked out of the bunker, stepping onto the windswept cliffside.
The storm had finally passed.
The dark, apocalyptic hurricane clouds were fracturing in the east, giving way to the brilliant, piercing golden rays of a new dawn. Down in the harbor, federal cutters secured the smoking ruins of Vance Cay, while medical evacuation helicopters cut through the morning sky.
Kaelen walked up beside me, handing me a clean, dry wool blanket.
"The federal prosecutor just received the files," he said quietly, his gaze fixed on the horizon. "Victoria Vance was arrested at Zurich International two hours ago trying to board a private jet to Dubai. The Sterling board has been frozen. You won, Elena."
I wrapped the blanket around my shoulders, feeling the warmth of the rising sun against my cold skin for the first time in weeks. The nightmare was over. The island that had been my prison and my attempted grave was now the tomb of the Vance dynasty.
"It wasn't about winning, Kaelen," I murmured, watching the golden light dance across the restless sea. "It was about survival. And taking back my life."
He smiled faintly, nodding toward the cutter waiting at the jetty below. "Your transport is ready. We can leave this godforsaken rock whenever you want."
May you like
I took a deep breath of the fresh, salty morning air, feeling an overwhelming sense of liberation washing over my soul.
"Let's go home," I said.
