Chapter 37 - The Tower of Reckoning

The northern communications tower sat perched atop a five-hundred-foot cliff overlooking the churning Atlantic surf. The winds here were ferocious, ripping at our clothes and threatening to tear us from the narrow catwalk that led to the transmitter bunker.
Below us, the federal cutters were exchanging heavy fire with Sterling's mercenary boats near the reef. Tracers lit up the torrential rain in vicious streaks of emerald and scarlet.
Kaelen kicked open the steel door of the communications bunker, scanning the room before dragging a trembling, soaked Sloane inside. I slammed the door shut, dropping the heavy steel bar into place just as high-caliber rounds began hammering against the reinforced exterior.
"They're pinning us down," Kaelen said, setting up his rifle at the bunker’s narrow firing slit. "The door will hold for five minutes, no more. Get the data up, Elena."
I sat at the primary terminal, wiping rain from my eyes. The terminal screen glowed with the emblem of the Sterling Syndicate.
"Retina scan," I commanded, grabbing Sloane by the hair and forcing her face in front of the optical sensor.
"I won't... they'll hunt me down... they'll kill me..." Sloane wept, struggling weakly against my grip.
"They won't get the chance. You're going to a maximum-security federal penitentiary for the rest of your life," I said, forcing her eyelid open.
The scanner beeped green.
*IDENTITY CONFIRMED: EXECUTIVE LEVEL 4 - SLOANE CARTER.*
*ACCESS GRANTED.*
I shoved the encrypted thumb drive into the USB port. The screen flickered violently as my San Juan decryption protocol initiated.
"Routing through Bloomberg, Reuters, and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network," I whispered, my fingers flying across the mechanical keys. "Broadcasting all shell entities, money-laundering pipelines, and government bribery ledgers in 3... 2... 1."
I hit ENTER.
Across the globe, every terminal connected to the international financial wire received the unredacted files of the Sterling-Vance offshore consortium. In seconds, billions of dollars in fraudulent bonds were frozen. Stock tickers began plunging into freefall. The empire built on my suffering was disintegrating in real-time across the world’s screens.

"It's done," I whispered, watching the transmission bar hit 100%. "They're finished."
Suddenly, the steel door of the bunker buckled with a violent screech.
