Chapter 9 - The Heart of the Empire

Friday morning arrived under clear, brilliant blue skies over Milan.

The private pediatric wing of San Raffaele Hospital had been completely bought out and secured by the Vitale syndicate for the day. Armed guards stood at every corridor entrance, looking like high-end corporate security, while the world’s leading cardiac surgeons gathered in the state-of-the-art operating theater.

Elena sat in the private waiting room, her fingers locked tightly in Alessandro’s.

Across the room, Matteo was sitting on Marco’s shoulders, pointing at the passing airplanes visible through the panoramic window, his young mind kept blissfully distracted by his uncle.

For four agonizing hours, the red light above the operating suite remained illuminated.

Alessandro did not leave Elena’s side for a single second. Whenever she began to tremble, his arm tightened around her shoulders, his lips pressing gentle, reassuring kisses against her temple.

“She is strong,” Alessandro murmured into her hair. “She has your fierce spirit and my stubbornness. She will pull through this, my love.”

“I’m so scared, Alessandro,” Elena wept softly, burying her face into his neck. “I’ve spent five years carrying this fear alone. Every time she caught a cold, every time she got out of breath at the playground... I thought I was going to lose her.”

“You are not alone anymore,” Alessandro swore, cupping her face in his hands, wiping away her tears with his thumbs. “You will never carry a burden alone for the rest of your days. I am your shield, Elena. Your home. Your husband.”

The double doors of the surgical ward swung open.

Dr. Henderson, the chief surgeon from Boston, stepped out, pulling down his surgical mask with a broad, exhausted smile.

Elena and Alessandro sprang to their feet simultaneously.

“Doctor?” Elena choked out.

“The procedure was an absolute textbook success,” Dr. Henderson announced, beaming. “The catheter repair was seamless. The valve is functioning perfectly at one hundred percent capacity. Little Sofia is already waking up in recovery, asking for her stuffed rabbit.”

Elena let out a sob of pure, unadulterated joy, collapsing into Alessandro’s arms. Alessandro caught her, burying his face in her neck, his own shoulders shaking with silent, tearful relief.

Matteo cheered from Marco’s shoulders, throwing his small hands in the air. “Sofia is fixed! Sofia is fixed!”

An hour later, Elena and Alessandro were permitted into the recovery room.

Sofia lay in the large hospital bed, looking small beneath the white sheets, but her cheeks were already flushed with a healthy, vibrant pink that Elena had never seen before. Her gray eyes sparkled as she saw her parents enter.

“Mama! Papa!” Sofia chirped, her voice clear and strong.

Alessandro walked over to the bed, carefully scooping the little girl into his arms, resting her against his chest while avoiding her small medical monitors.

“You did so well, my brave little princess,” Alessandro whispered, kissing her forehead repeatedly.

“My chest doesn't thump like a drum anymore,” Sofia said proudly, patting her heart with a small hand. “The doctor said I can run in the garden next week! Can I, Papa?”

“You can run anywhere you want,” Alessandro promised, his voice thick with tears. “The whole world is yours.”

Matteo climbed onto the edge of the bed, gently poking his sister’s arm. “You have to let me win at tag first, though.”

“Never!” Sofia giggled.

Standing beside the bed, watching her restored family, Elena felt the last residual wounds of the past five years heal completely. The nightmare had ended. The light had finally broken through the darkness.

Alessandro looked up at Elena, his gray eyes shining with an unmistakable question. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.

Inside the box was her original wedding ring—the flawless emerald-cut diamond ring she had left behind on his desk five years ago when she fled into the night. It had been polished to perfection, shining like a star.

Alessandro took her hand, sinking to one knee beside the hospital bed, in front of their children and Marco.

“Five years ago, our vows were torn apart by deceit,” Alessandro said, his voice echoing with profound, eternal devotion. “I cannot erase the years we lost, Elena. But I can give you every second of my future. Will you marry me again? Will you be my wife, my queen, and the mother of our dynasty, for real this time?”

Sofia clapped her little hands. Matteo nodded encouragingly.

Elena looked down at the man who had torn down an entire underworld just to bring her home.

May you like

“Yes,” she whispered, tears of joy streaming down her face. “A thousand times, yes.”
