Chapter 5 - The Council of Wolves

The Grand Chamber of the High Council sat beneath the ancient foundations of the Castello Sforzesco. Lit by flickering iron braziers and guarded by elite sentries from the Five Families, the underground vault had settled mafia blood feuds for over three centuries.

Around the massive oval table of black granite, the heads of the four rival families sat in stony silence. At the head of the table sat Don Antonio Ferrini, an aging, silver-haired snake with cold reptilian eyes. Beside him stood his daughter, Vittoria, dressed in an immaculate ivory mourning dress, her face a masterclass in tragic, wronged victimhood.

“Alessandro Vitale has broken the sacred code,” Don Ferrini announced, slamming his palm against the stone table. “He humiliated my daughter, dishonored the alliance that brought peace to Lombardy, and harbors a traitor’s sister! By the laws of the Council, the Vitale syndicate must forfeit its northern trade routes, and Alessandro must step down as Capo di Tutti Capi!”

The other three Dons nodded in solemn agreement, murmuring among themselves.

“He left me standing in the ballroom,” Vittoria added, dabbing at a tearless eye with a lace handkerchief. “He was seduced by a common woman who abandoned him years ago, parading street urchins as heirs to claim his fortune. We cannot let a madman driven by sentimentality govern our brotherhood!”

Before the council could take a vote, the massive iron doors of the chamber groaned open.

The two guards stationed at the entrance were violently shoved backward into the room. Alessandro Vitale stepped over the threshold like a Roman conqueror entering a conquered province.

He was flanked by twenty armed soldiers in tailored suits, their submachine guns resting in ready positions. But it was not his armed escort that silenced the room.

It was the woman on his arm.

Elena walked beside him, radiating an icy, untouchable elegance. She wore a high-collared black silk gown that clung to her curves, her dark hair swept up in an intricate chignon fastened with antique diamond pins from the Vitale family vault. Around her throat hung the legendary *Occhio di San Pietro*—a fifty-carat sapphire necklace that had only ever been worn by the reigning Matriarch of the Vitale dynasty.

Behind them walked Rosa, holding the hands of Matteo and Sofia. The children were dressed in miniature bespoke formal wear, looking every bit like young royalty born to rule.

Vittoria’s face drained of color. Her hand dropped the handkerchief.

“You dare bring children into this sacred chamber?” Don Ferrini barked, though his voice lacked conviction.

“I bring my family,” Alessandro replied, his voice reverberating through the cavernous hall like thunder. He walked straight to the center of the room, completely ignoring the weapons drawn by the Ferrini guards. “I bring the future of this council.”

Alessandro reached into his breast pocket and tossed a thick leather dossier onto the center of the granite table.

“Inside that folder is the certified DNA verification from three independent labs across Europe,” Alessandro said coldly, staring directly into Don Ferrini’s eyes. “Matteo and Sofia are my legitimate children. Born of my legal wife, Elena Vitale.”

“Legal wife?” Vittoria shrieked, breaking her carefully crafted composure. “You divorced her! The decree was finalized five years ago!”

“The decree was signed under false pretenses and fabricated evidence,” Alessandro snapped, turning his predatory gaze toward her. “Which makes it completely null and void under Italian civil law, and utterly blasphemous under the code of this Council.”

He tossed a second folder onto the table. It slid across the polished stone and slammed against Vittoria’s trembling fingers.

“Open it, Vittoria,” Alessandro dared her, his voice dripping with venom.

With shaking hands, Don Ferrini opened the file. Inside were intercepted bank transactions, forged death certificates bearing Vittoria’s encrypted digital signature, and recorded telephone conversations between Vittoria and the Camorra hitmen she had hired to orchestrate Marco Rossi’s fake assassination.

“You lied to Elena,” Alessandro declared, loud enough for every Don to hear. “You forged my signature to order a hit on her brother. You drove my pregnant wife out of this city so you could crawl into my bed and position your family to cannibalize the Vitale empire from within!”

Don Ferrini looked at his daughter, his eyes widening in horror as he read the irrefutable evidence. “Vittoria... is this true?”

“She didn't just betray me,” Alessandro continued, stepping forward until he was towering over Vittoria, the cold aura of death rolling off him in waves. “She threatened the life of the heir to the High Council. By the ancient laws of blood, what is the punishment for plotting the assassination of a Capo’s unborn child?”

The chamber went deathly silent.

Don Moretti, the oldest don at the table, stood slowly. “The punishment is death. For the perpetrator, and exile for the bloodline that fostered her.”

Vittoria backed away, knocking her chair over, her eyes wide with animal panic. “Father! Help me! It was for us! For the family!”

Don Ferrini closed his eyes, a broken man. “May God have mercy on your soul, Vittoria. The Council cannot protect you.”

“Enzo,” Alessandro commanded smoothly, turning his back on the screaming woman. “Take her to the lower holding cells. Strip the Ferrini family of every shipping container in Genoa by midnight. If a single Ferrini soldier steps foot north of the Po River, eliminate them.”

Elena stood beside Alessandro, her heart racing as she watched justice—brutal, swift, and absolute—being served. As the guards dragged the hysterical Vittoria away, Alessandro reached down and laced his fingers through Elena’s.

His grip was warm, solid, and unyielding.

“The alliance with the Ferrinis is dead,” Alessandro announced to the remaining Dons, his voice echoing with undisputed authority. “My wife has returned. The Vitale dynasty is whole. Does any man in this room dispute my command?”

No one spoke. Every Don at the table bowed his head in submission.
