Chapter 7 - The Ambush at Bellisario

Alessandro’s transformation was instantaneous. The vulnerable, remorseful lover vanished; in his place stood the lethal, cold-blooded warlord.
He shoved Elena behind him, drawing a silenced matte-black pistol from beneath his jacket in a single, fluid motion.
“Enzo!” Alessandro roared into his wrist comm. “Report!”
*“Breach at the southern gate!”* Enzo’s voice crackled through static, punctuated by the sharp rattle of automatic gunfire. *“It’s not the Ferrinis! It’s the Sicilian faction! Don Calogero brought three tactical squads—they used heavy explosives on the perimeter wall! They’re heading for the main residence!”*
Elena’s blood turned to ice. “The children! Alessandro, the children are upstairs!”
“Elena, listen to me,” Alessandro grabbed her shoulders, his grip bruisingly tight, grounding her amidst the rising panic. “The master suite is a certified safe room. Take the kids, lock the reinforced steel door from the inside, and do not open it for anyone except me or Enzo. Do you understand?”
“You can’t fight them alone out here!”
“They came into my home. They threatened my family,” Alessandro replied, his eyes burning with an unholy, demonic wrath. “None of them are leaving this mountain alive. Go! Now!”
Elena ran through the glass terrace doors as bullets shattered the upper windows of the ballroom behind her. She sprinted down the gilded hallway, sliding across the marble floor as plaster dust rained down from the ceiling.
She burst into the nursery. Sofia was crying hysterically, clutching her plush rabbit, while Matteo stood near the window, wielding a heavy brass desk lamp like a weapon.
“Mama!” Sofia screamed.
“Come here, both of you!” Elena scooped Sofia into her arms and grabbed Matteo’s hand, dragging them into the master bedroom. She slammed the heavy reinforced mahogany door shut and punched the six-digit emergency code into the keypad. Heavy steel bolts slid into the frame with a resounding thud.
Outside, the estate had become an active warzone.
Down on the grand marble staircase, Alessandro moved with terrifying lethality. He fired with surgical precision, dropping three heavily armed mercenaries who breached the foyer before they could raise their rifles.
Beside him, Enzo and a dozen Vitale soldiers returned fire, pinning the invaders behind the stone pillars.
“Why would Calogero strike now?” Enzo yelled over the din of shattering glass and gunfire. “He knows this is suicide!”
“He knows the Ferrini fall left a power vacuum in the south!” Alessandro snarled, reloading his weapon without looking. “He thinks if he kills me and wipes out the twins tonight, the Council will have no choice but to name him Capo di Tutti Capi!”
A grenade bounced across the marble floor toward their position.
“Take cover!” Alessandro tackled Enzo behind a reinforced stone barrier just as the blast detonated, sending shards of marble and ancient portraits flying through the air.
Through the smoke, a squad of black-clad mercenaries sprinted toward the sweeping staircase—aiming directly for the master wing.
A blinding, red fury completely overtook Alessandro’s mind.
He didn't seek cover. He rose from behind the shattered pillar, a combat shotgun in his hands, marching directly into the crossfire like an immortal specter of death. He unleashed absolute carnage upon the invaders, every shot hitting its mark, his face splattered with soot and blood. He was a father protecting the sanctuary of his family, and against that primal force, no amount of mercenary training could stand.
Within ten brutal minutes, the gunfire began to dwindle. The grand foyer of Villa Bellisario was littered with fallen enemies, the air thick with cordite and smoke.
Alessandro stood at the top of the stairs, breathing heavily, his suit torn, blood dripping from a grazing wound on his left bicep.
Down in the foyer, the heavy double doors were kicked open one final time. But it wasn't another wave of attackers.
It was Marco Rossi.
Elena’s brother, clad in tactical gear, strode into the foyer with twenty loyal soldiers from the Sicilian safehouse, their weapons smoking.
“Looks like we missed the opening act, Boss,” Marco called out, looking around at the devastation with a grim whistle. “We intercepted Calogero’s rear convoy at the highway. The snake is in chains outside.”
Alessandro lowered his weapon, exhaling a ragged breath. “Good work, Marco. Clear the grounds. Check every shadow.”
Alessandro turned and walked toward the master bedroom. His hands trembled slightly—not from the adrenaline of battle, but from the terror of what could have happened to the three souls locked behind that door.
He tapped the intercom. “Elena. It’s me. It’s over.”
The heavy steel bolts disengaged. The door swung open.
Elena stood there, her eyes wide, taking in his blood-splattered face and torn clothes. Before he could say a word, she threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his chest, uncaring of the blood and dirt on his clothes.
Matteo and Sofia ran out, wrapping their little arms around Alessandro’s legs.

Alessandro fell to his knees in the doorway, wrapping his arms around all three of them, burying his face in the warmth of their embrace. The boss of Italy wept silently into the dark hair of his family, whispering prayers of gratitude into the smoke-filled air.
