Chapter 3 - The Spider’s Web

Elena stared at him, the world tilting violently on its axis.

“What... what did you say?”

Alessandro did not answer immediately. He strode over to his antique desk, grabbed a secure burner phone, and dialed a number from memory. He put it on speaker and held it out toward her.

The phone rang twice. Then, a groggy, familiar voice answered in Italian with a thick coastal accent.

*“Boss? It’s three in the morning. Has the gala ended already?”*

Elena’s knees buckled. She clutched the edge of the mahogany desk, her knuckles turning white. The voice on the phone belonged to Marco. Her brother. The brother she had mourned for five agonizing years. The brother whose memorial mass she had attended in secret, crying behind a black veil in an empty church in Naples.

“Marco,” Alessandro said, his eyes never leaving Elena’s trembling form. “Are you at the safehouse in Palermo?”

*“Yes, Boss. The shipments from the south are secure. Why are you calling? Did something happen with the Ferrinis?”*

Elena let out a choked, broken sob. Alessandro tapped the screen, cutting the call off instantly.

“How?” she whispered, sinking to the floor. “How is he alive? I saw the car, Alessandro! The police reports... the blood on the rocks...”

Alessandro knelt before her, his hands coming up to cradle her tear-streaked face. For once, Elena didn't have the strength to push him away.

“Marco stole twenty million euros from the Camorra,” Alessandro explained softly, his thumbs brushing away her tears with an agonizing tenderness. “He was in debt to loan sharks who were going to skin him alive and send his head to your doorstep. The dossier you found was an extraction plan, Elena. I faked his death. I paid off his debts, gave him a new identity, and hid him in Sicily under my direct protection. I couldn't tell you because your sisterly panic had to be convincing for the Camorra to close the contract.”

Elena shook her head frantically, her mind spinning into a vortex of confusion and horror. “No... no, the note on your desk... it said ‘Eliminate Marco Rossi permanently’... and then your secretary gave me the envelope...”

“Vittoria,” Alessandro hissed, the name coming out like a curse from the pits of hell.

Elena looked up, her breath hitching. “Vittoria?”

“Vittoria Ferrini was the head of my administrative logistics back then,” Alessandro said, his voice turning into ice. “She was the one who managed the paper trails. She knew Marco was in danger. If she gave you that file, and told you I signed his execution...”

He trailed off, his eyes flashing with a murderous light. The puzzle pieces were falling into place with terrifying precision. Five years ago, Elena had vanished without a trace overnight. A week later, Alessandro had received a forged letter in Elena’s handwriting stating she had terminated her pregnancy because she couldn't stomach bearing a Vitale child, along with bank slips showing a payout from a rival syndicate.

He had spent five years drowning in bitter hatred, believing the woman he loved more than life itself had murdered his unborn heirs and abandoned him. In his grief and rage, he had thrown himself into expanding his empire, eventually agreeing to marry Vittoria Ferrini to consolidate power in the north, uncaring of his own happiness.

“She orchestrated it all,” Elena breathed, the realization washing over her like a tidal wave of ice water. “She made me believe you were a monster who killed my family. She told me that if I didn't disappear, the next bullet would be for the baby I was carrying!”

Alessandro pulled Elena into his arms, crushing her against his chest with an intensity that bordered on painful. Elena buried her face into his damp shoulder, five years of grief, terror, and solitary struggle dissolving into wracking sobs against the lapels of his tuxedo.

“She stole five years from us,” Alessandro snarled into her hair, his fingers digging into the fabric of her dress. “Five years of my children’s lives. Five years of waking up in an empty bed wanting to tear the world apart with my bare hands.”

He pulled back, his hands framing her jaw, forcing her to look into the storm of his eyes.

“Listen to me, Elena. You are never leaving this house again. Not because you are my prisoner, but because the moment Vittoria saw you at the gala tonight, she realized her lie has expired. The Ferrinis are ruthlessly ambitious. If they realize you have two Vitale heirs, they will not just try to silence you—they will try to exterminate every single one of us.”

Before Elena could reply, the heavy double doors of the suite swung open without a knock.

Enzo stood in the doorway, his face pale and drawn, holding a tablet in his hand.

“Boss,” Enzo said urgently, ignoring the intimate scene before him. “We have a problem.”

Alessandro stood, stepping between Enzo and Elena instinctively. “What is it?”

“Vittoria just held an emergency press conference outside Palazzo Ferrini,” Enzo reported, his voice tight. “She publicly announced that you abandoned her at the altar for an unfaithful ex-wife who has returned with illegitimate bastards. And worse—the Ferrini family has formally called an emergency assembly of the Five Families for noon tomorrow. They are claiming you violated the Blood Treaty, and they are demanding your removal from the High Council.”

Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.

Alessandro, however, did not flinch. A slow, chilling smile touched the corners of his lips—the smile of a demon who had just been handed an excuse to go to war.

“Bastards?” Alessandro echoed, his voice silk-wrapped steel. “Enzo, tell Dr. Castiglione to rush those DNA results. And assemble the Capos. Tomorrow at noon, we are not going to a council meeting. We are going to a public execution.”
