Chapter 1 - The Iron Grip

The rain had begun to fall over Milan in thin, icy needles, silvering the cobblestones of the service courtyard. Elena froze with one foot inside the dented yellow taxi, the low rumble of its idle engine vibrating against her ribs.

Behind her, that voice.

It was a voice she had heard in her nightmares, in the feverish memories of late-night nursing sessions in cold, rented flats, in the echoes of prayers she had abandoned years ago. Low, velvet-smooth, and laced with the lethal resonance of an apex predator who had never once been denied what he claimed as his own.

*“Elena!”*

Her fingers curled tightly into the wet handle of the cab door. In the back seat, curled beneath an oversized woolen scarf, five-year-old Matteo stirred, blinking sleepily, while his twin sister, Sofia, clutched her battered plush rabbit to her chest. Their eyes—mercurial, bright, and dangerously gray—peered through the smudged window toward the towering figure charging through the shadows.

“Get in, lady! Close the door or I’m pulling away!” the driver barked in harsh Milanese dialect, eyeing the giant in the bespoke three-piece tuxedo who was eating up the pavement in strides that defied human physics.

“Go,” Elena whispered, her voice cracking. “Please, just drive!”

She tried to pull the door shut, but before the latch could engage, a hand clad in an onyx signet ring slammed against the metal frame. The force rattled the entire chassis of the car.

Alessandro’s chest rose and fell in jagged heaves. Rain soaked his dark hair, plastering it against his forehead, but his face was an unreadable mask carved out of white granite. His gray eyes burned into hers with an intensity so furious, so unholy, that Elena felt the breath ripped cleanly from her lungs.

“Did you honestly think,” Alessandro murmured, his voice deadly quiet beneath the hiss of the rain, “that you could walk into my city, lay bare my blood before five hundred witnesses, and vanish into the night again?”

“They aren’t yours,” Elena lied instantly, the words tasting like ash and iron on her tongue. “Let go of the door, Alessandro. You’re making a scene. Your fiancée is waiting inside.”

The muscle in Alessandro’s jaw ticked violently. He didn't look at the driver. He didn't look at the streetlights. His gaze remained locked on Elena’s pale, defiant face. Then, slowly, his eyes drifted downward, peering through the glass into the darkened back seat.

Matteo pressed his small palm against the window, staring back at the towering stranger without fear. Sofia tucked herself behind her brother, but her gaze never wavered. Two identical pairs of eyes—his own father’s eyes, the eyes of the ruthless Vitale dynasty—gazed back at him.

A ragged sound escaped Alessandro’s throat. It was the sound of an armor cracking open, exposing raw, bleeding muscle.

“Step out of the car, Elena,” he ordered softly.

“No.”

“Elena. Do not make me pull this door off its hinges.”

“You have no right to touch me!” Elena hissed, leaning forward, shielding the window with her body. “We are divorced. You signed the papers five years ago. You traded me for an alliance with the Ferrini family! Leave us alone!”

“I signed papers because you left a forged note saying you aborted my child and ran away with my rival’s blood money!” Alessandro roared, the veneer of aristocratic control finally shattering. Several valet boys near the alley froze, turning pale at the sight of the head of the Vitale syndicate losing his mind in a public alley.

Elena flinched as if struck. “What? That’s a lie! I left because—"

“Out,” he commanded, cutting her off. He reached in, his large hand wrapping around her wrist. His skin was burning hot against her ice-cold flesh. The familiarity of his touch sent a terrifying shudder down her spine. “We are not having this conversation on the pavement like common beggars. Enzo!”

From the gloom behind Alessandro, Enzo appeared like a wraith, breathless, umbrella in hand.

“Clear the alley,” Alessandro ordered without breaking eye contact with Elena. “Pay the driver fifty thousand euros to forget he ever picked up a fare at Palazzo Ferrini. If a single word leaves his mouth, bury him in the canal.”

“Understood, Boss,” Enzo said, instantly moving to the driver’s side.

“You monster!” Elena fought against his grip, kicking her heels against the pavement as Alessandro smoothly hauled her out into the rain. “Don't touch my children! Sofia! Matteo, stay inside!”

“Mama!” Sofia cried, her small voice cutting through the drizzle like a razor.

Matteo kicked the door open, his tiny shoes splashing into the puddle. The five-year-old stood between his weeping sister and the giant mafia lord, his small fists clenched, his chin tilted up with an arrogance that was so terrifyingly identical to Alessandro’s that Enzo paused mid-step.

“Let go of my mom,” the little boy said, his voice trembling slightly but firm.

Alessandro froze. The absolute silence that fell over the alley was heavier than the falling rain. The man who had ordered the execution of cartel bosses and negotiated treaties worth billions knelt slowly on the wet cobblestones, his thousand-euro trousers soaking up the street water.

He was eye-level with the boy now. Up close, the boy’s features were an undeniable mirror of his own childhood portrait hanging in the Grand Hall of Lake Como.

“What is your name?” Alessandro asked, his voice shaking with a tenderness none of his men had ever heard.

“Matteo,” the boy replied cautiously. “And you’re hurting her.”

Alessandro slowly released Elena’s wrist. He raised his hands, palms up, showing surrender for the first time in his thirty-four years of life.

“I will never hurt her,” Alessandro whispered, his gray eyes shining with an emotion he could not name. “And I will never let anyone hurt you. Either of you.”

He looked back up at Elena, the cold ruthlessness returning to his posture as he rose to his full height.

“My Maybach is waiting at the private gate. You will come with me, Elena. Willingly, or I will have Enzo carry the luggage while I carry you. Choose.”

Elena caught Matteo in her arms, hoisting him against her hip while Sofia ran to cling to her skirt. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She knew the power of Alessandro Vitale. She knew there was nowhere on this continent she could run where his wolves would not sniff her out by sunrise.

“Just the estate,” Elena whispered, her voice thick with unshed tears. “You give us one night of safety, and then you let us go. You’re marrying Vittoria Ferrini on Saturday.”

Alessandro’s jaw hardened, his expression darkening like a storm cloud gathering over the Alps.

May you like

“Vittoria Ferrini is no longer my concern,” he said coldly. “You are.”
