Chapter 47 - The Ghost at Mile Marker 14

*02:14:30... 02:14:29...*

The rain poured in violent sheets against the windshield of Julian’s armored SUV as they tore through the darkness along Route 50. Julian was driving with lethal focus, weaving through the deserted highway at breakneck speed, flanked by two chase vehicles carrying Marcus and his tactical team.

Beside him, Elaine sat clutching the yellowed parchment letter from Rupert. Her phone was pressed to her ear.

"Logan, pick up the damn phone!" she muttered under her breath.

On the fourth ring, the call connected. Logan’s voice sounded groggy, but instantly tightened with alarm. "Elaine? What’s going on? It’s past two in the morning."

"Logan, get out of the main house right now," Elaine ordered, her voice cutting like steel. "Rupert Bradley is alive. He has operatives hunting us, and Mother just collapsed in custody."

"What?!" Logan sputtered, the sound of bedsheets rustling in the background. "Rupert? Uncle Rupert died in a yacht explosion fifteen years ago!"

"It was staged, Logan! Listen to me very carefully," Elaine insisted, leaning forward against the dashboard. "Are you alone at the estate?"

"Yes, just me and two private security guards at the front gate."

"Go to the carriage house. Behind the old stables. Do you know where Father kept the spare keys to the antique strongbox inside the tack room?"

There was a beat of silence on the other end, followed by the sound of rapid footsteps. "Yeah... Dad gave me an old brass skeleton key on my eighteenth birthday. He told me never to lose it, said it unlocked the only thing in this world that could save our family if Bernice ever lost her mind. Elaine... is that what this is?"

"Yes," Elaine said, her heart swelling with an ache for the brother who was finally waking up from a lifetime of manipulation. "Mother locked Clara’s veil in that strongbox. Rupert has initiated a digital liquidation order in Geneva that will destroy Bradley Holdings and put me in prison by 6:00 AM. We need the registration cipher sewn into that veil."

"I'm running to the carriage house now," Logan said, his breathing heavy as he sprinted into the storm. "I'll have it ready by the time you—"

Suddenly, the line crackled with static.

"Logan?" Elaine shouted.

Through the speaker, the sound of shattering glass tore through the night, followed by the deep, terrifying bark of a guard dog cut short by a muffled gunshot.

"Logan!" Elaine screamed.

"Elaine, they're here!" Logan gasped, his voice tight with panic. "Black SUVs! They didn't come through the main gate, they cut through the back woods at Mile Marker 14! They're surrounding the carriage house!"

Julian slammed his foot on the accelerator, the engine roaring as the speedometer surged past one hundred miles per hour. "Hold them off, Logan! We are five minutes away!"

"I've got the box," Logan whispered, panting in the dark. "I'm locking myself in the underground wine cellar beneath the tack room. Hurry... please, Elaine, hurry!"

The call disconnected with a hiss of dead static.

Julian gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white. "Marcus! Weapons hot! We have armed hostiles engaging on the Bradley estate grounds!"
