Chapter 25 - The Half of the Coin

Lucas slowly lowered his hands, showing his empty palms to Detective Ruiz. Julian remained watchful, his arm firmly planted around my waist, keeping me grounded as my entire existence threatened to spin off its axis.

"Come inside. Close the door," Ruiz ordered, checking the hallway before bolting the lock once more.

Lucas stepped into the warmth of the room. He didn't look at Julian's expensive suit, nor at Ruiz's badge. His focus remained unbroken, anchored entirely on me. "I know this feels impossible. Bernice made sure you grew up believing you were an unwanted stray she took in out of Christian charity. But you were never an orphan, Elaine. You were an heiress hidden in plain sight."

"Who raised you?" my voice shook as I found the courage to speak. "If my father... if Arthur took me, where were you?"

"A foster family in Virginia," Lucas replied, pulling a weathered silver chain from under his collar. Hanging from the loop was a fractured, intricately carved silver medallion—an antique coin split cleanly down the center with jagged serrations. "Arthur couldn't take both of us without raising red flags. Two identical newborn twins appearing overnight in a suburban Maryland home would have alerted the people hunting Clara immediately."

I instinctively reached to the collar of my blouse. Resting against my collarbone was the very piece my father had given me on my eighteenth birthday—a silver medallion he claimed he bought at an estate sale.

Lucas noticed my hand and took a half-step forward, his eyes softening. "Take it off, Elaine. See for yourself."

With trembling fingers, I unclasped my chain. Julian watched intently as I held up the jagged silver edge. Lucas held out his piece. When the two halves met between our fingertips, they locked together with an audible, seamless snap. The engraved crest of the Hastings family—a phoenix rising from a laurel branch—was whole again.

"Clara Hastings was a visionary," Lucas said, his jaw tightening with simmering fury. "She designed a proprietary genetic mapping process that Vanguard Bio-Pharm wanted to monopolize. When she refused their buyout and prepared to report their illegal trials, they arranged the crash. But she anticipated them. She locked the research patents inside a blind trust tied to the Hastings Foundation."

"The trust Arthur mentioned on the tape," Julian interjected, his sharp legal mind instantly connecting the threads. "The endowment that unlocks on Elaine's twenty-seventh birthday."

"Not just Elaine's," Lucas corrected, looking directly into Julian's eyes. "Ours. It requires the physical biometric signatures of both living heirs. Bernice knew that. Her handler at Vanguard told her that if she could control Elaine until that date, they would fabricate documents to claim the estate and split the hundreds of millions."

A cold draft seemed to sweep through the room. "And Richard?" I asked, my voice cracking. "Did Richard know?"

"Richard was the pawn," Lucas answered darkly. "And he just made a move that put a target on all our backs."
