Chapter 22 - Shadows from the Past

The room suddenly felt chilly despite the warm afternoon sunlight streaming through the blinds. Julian, who had just walked into the office carrying two coffees, paused in the doorway, his eyes darting between Evelyn and me.
"Genetics?" Julian asked, setting the cups down. "Arthur was a software developer. What does genetics have to do with anything?"
"Arthur was a software engineer, yes," Evelyn said, leaning against the edge of the desk. "He developed algorithms for sorting massive datasets. But before he met Bernice, his primary corporate client was a private biomedical research clinic in Maryland. He built the encryption software that protected their client registries."
Evelyn gestured toward the envelope. "The inner compartment contained two items. One was a vintage cassette tape. The other was this."
She broke the wax seal and slid out a yellowed hospital intake record dated three months before my birth.
My eyes scanned the faded typewritten lines:
*Patient Name: Bernice Vance.*
*Procedure: Hysterectomy / Complete Bilateral Oophorectomy.*
*Date of Surgery: June 12, 1996.*
I stared at the paper, the words blurring before my eyes.
"June 1996?" I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs. "My birthday is September 1997. Evelyn... this says she had a complete hysterectomy more than a year before I was born."
"That’s impossible," Julian said, stepping forward and picking up the hospital record. "If she had this surgery in June of 1996, she couldn't have carried Elaine. She couldn't have carried Sterling either!"
"Sterling was born in 1994, so he was her biological son," Evelyn said in a voice that was barely a murmur. "Arthur and Bernice had Sterling naturally. But a year later, Bernice developed severe complications and underwent an emergency procedure. She could never bear children again."
The room spun around me. The memory of Bernice’s words in the hospital room flashed through my mind like lightning: *“I am your mother! I gave you life!”*
"Then who am I?" I gasped, my knees buckling. Julian caught me immediately, holding me tight as he guided me into the leather armchair. "If Bernice didn't give birth to me... whose child was I?"
Evelyn reached into the envelope and pulled out the second item: a vintage micro-cassette tape labeled with Arthur's unmistakable hand:
