Chapter 28 - The Secret in Route 50

The heavy rain washed the streaks of plaster dust and dried blood from the SUV’s windshield as we sped down the dark, glistening highway. Detective Ruiz was on his phone in the front passenger seat, issuing emergency commands to the state police, ordering an immediate lockdown on Sterling Vance’s registered properties and a high-alert bulletin for Richard.
In the back seat, I sat wedged between Julian and Lucas. I looked down at my hands; they were shaking uncontrollably. Lucas reached out, his rough, calloused fingers closing gently over mine.
"You're safe," Lucas said softly. "They didn't get the files, and they didn't get you."
"Why did our mother die on Route 50?" I asked, looking up at him through tears that I could no longer hold back. "The tape said she was in an automobile crash there. Is that where it all began?"
Lucas nodded slowly, his gaze drifting out into the pitch-black woods flying past the window. "Mile marker 14 on Route 50 wasn't just where her car was forced off the road. Half a mile off the shoulder, hidden in the pine ridge, is Clara's old field cabin. It was registered under her maiden grandmother’s name. Arthur knew about it, but Bernice never did."
"What's out there?" Julian asked, his knuckles white on the steering wheel as he checked his rearview mirrors for trailing headlights.
"The secondary server," Lucas answered. "Clara wasn't just a geneticist; she was a cryptographer. She knew Vance’s syndicate would erase her work from the main lab servers the second she turned whistle-blower. She backed up the uncorrupted genomic sequence and the real Hastings trust deed to an offline air-gapped system inside that cabin."
"And that server requires both halves of the silver medallion to open the physical drive," I realized, touching the snapped-together coin in my palm.
"Exactly," Lucas smiled faintly. "Two keys, two heirs. Clara ensured that neither of us could be manipulated alone. We had to survive, find each other, and unlock it together."
Julian glanced into the mirror at Lucas. "If Vance knows about the trust, does he know about the cabin?"
"He knows it exists," Lucas replied grimly. "He spent the last twenty years trying to pinpoint the location. But the coordinates were split between the two medallions. Hold your piece up to the light, Elaine."
I raised the antique silver coin against the amber dashboard console. When illuminated from behind, micro-perforations along the jagged break line projected tiny pinpricks of light onto the leather seat.

"Geographic coordinates," Julian breathed in awe. "Clara was a genius."
"She was a mother trying to protect her children from monsters," Lucas corrected, his voice heavy with solemn pride. "And we are thirty minutes away from finishing what she started."
