Chapter 42 - The Wedding Gown Reborn

Three weeks later, the spring sun broke through the lingering winter frost, painting the Hudson Valley in vibrant strokes of emerald green and gold.
We chose not to hold our wedding in a grand cathedral or an ostentatious ballroom. Instead, Julian and I stood on the open terrace of an old stone estate overlooking the river—a property Clara Vance had owned in her youth, hidden away from the toxic legacy of Bradley Holdings.
Lucas was there, sitting in the front row in a sleek wheelchair, wearing a sharp navy suit, his face bright with genuine joy. beside him sat Detective Ruiz, dressed in formal civilian attire, smiling warmly.
When the string quartet began to play the opening notes of Pachelbel's Canon, the guests rose to their feet.
I stepped onto the white carpet, taking my first steps forward.
I was not wearing an off-the-rack gown, nor the charred remnants of the past.
For the past two weeks, a master seamstress had taken the salvaged silk trim—rescued from the edges of Clara’s burnt heirloom that had survived Bernice’s fireplace—and woven it into a breathtaking, modern silk gown designed specifically for me. The ivory silk shimmered like liquid pearl in the afternoon sun, the delicate antique lace adorning the train like phoenix feathers reborn from fire.
Julian stood at the altar beneath an arch of white roses and eucalyptus. As he saw me, tears gathered in the corners of his eyes, his smile radiant and full of unwavering devotion.
When I reached him, he took both of my hands, kissing the faint, fading scars on my skin.
"You are the strongest, most beautiful woman I have ever known," Julian whispered, his voice trembling with emotion.
"And you stayed through the fire," I answered, my heart overflowing with peace.
The vows we exchanged were not the hollow words of socialite contracts. They were promises forged in survival, tested by betrayal, and sealed by absolute love.
"By the power vested in me," the officiant proclaimed under the bright blue sky, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Julian pulled me into his arms, dipping me gently as his lips met mine. The applause of our true friends erupted around us, washing away every shadow, every tear, and every drop of venom Bernice had ever poured into our lives.
