Chapter 23 - The Voice on the Magnetic Tape

The old cassette player Detective Ruiz brought to the office hummed with a low electronic buzz as Julian pressed the play button.
The silence in the room was absolute. Even the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner seemed to fade as the magnetic tape hissed through the plastic spools.
Then, a voice filled the room.
It was Arthur Vance. His voice was tired, strained with pain, but filled with an overwhelming, tender cadence that brought instant tears to my eyes.
*"Elaine, my sweet girl..."* Arthur’s voice began, accompanied by the faint sound of coughing in the background. *"If you are listening to this, you have survived Bernice. You have claimed what was rightfully yours. But there is a debt of truth I owe you that I could never speak while I lived under her surveillance.*
*Bernice never loved you because she looked at you and saw the woman she could never be. Twenty-six years ago, my business partner at the Maryland research lab—a brilliant young geneticist named Clara Hastings—discovered that the clinic directors were illegally selling experimental reproductive research to offshore syndicates.*
*Clara tried to go to the authorities. But before she could testify, she was killed in an automobile crash on Route 50. What the authorities never found was Clara's newborn daughter. Clara had hidden the infant with me hours before the crash, knowing that the people hunting her would never search the home of her quiet software programmer.*
*I brought you home to Bernice. I begged her to let us adopt you in secret, using forged state records. Bernice agreed—not out of charity, but because Clara’s family had left behind an untouchable private endowment that could only be accessed by Clara's living heir upon reaching her twenty-seventh year.*
*Bernice kept you alive to hold that endowment hostage. But she hated you because you carried Clara’s eyes. She hated you because every time I looked at you, I saw a woman of courage, while she was trapped in her own greed.*
*Elaine... Clara Hastings did not die in that crash alone. There was a second child that night. A twin brother that Clara had placed with another family for protection.*
*His name is Lucas. And he has been looking for you his entire life. The final key to your mother's real legacy is in—"*
A loud, violent thump suddenly rattled against the frosted glass of our office entrance, cutting the tape’s hiss short.
Julian sprang to his feet, instantly shielding me. Detective Ruiz drew his weapon, motioning for Evelyn and me to stay behind the desk.
Through the frosted pane of the front door, a tall, broad silhouette stood motionless in the late afternoon shadows. A long manila envelope slid slowly beneath the door crack, landing quietly on the hardwood floor.

On the front of the envelope, written in fresh black ink, was a single handwritten line:
*“The fire didn't start with Bernice. Open the door, sister.”*
