Chapter 37 - The Reckoning of Eleanor

We descended the spiral stairs into the cold glare of the searchlights. As we stepped onto the drenched stone causeway, four harbor patrol officers moved forward, their hands resting on their utility belts.

"Step away from the structure, please," the lead officer commanded, his face solemn under the brim of his cap.

"Officers, arrest her!" Vanessa screamed, pushing past Julian's attorney. Her eyes were bloodshot, her face pale and twisted with spite. "She broke into the municipal light! She's stealing trust property to hide her sister's rightful inheritance! She’s been trying to ruin me since we were children!"

The deputy harbor commissioner, an older man with silver sideburns named Bradley, stepped forward with a legal binder. "Claire Vance, your sister filed an emergency affidavit declaring that you have illegally taken possession of assets tied to the Julian Vance bankruptcy proceedings. Until this matter is resolved in probate, this entire parcel is under municipal lock."

"Commissioner Bradley," I said, stepping past the officers and meeting his gaze unflinchingly. "When was the last time you verified the foundational title of Harbor Bay Terminal Four?"

Bradley frowned. "That title has belonged to Arthur Montgomery’s trust since 1994."

"It belonged to Arthur Montgomery because he forged a death certificate for Eleanor Vance," I said, unfolding the weather-resistant envelope from the safe and holding out the master charter.

Marcus stepped up beside me, pulling his state bar credentials and thrusting a second legal document into Bradley’s hands. "This is a direct, verified declaration from the French Maritime Consulate. Eleanor Vance is alive. She is the legal and sole proprietor of the Vance Shipping charter. And under California maritime law, any lien issued by Arthur Montgomery, Julian Vance, or Vanessa Montgomery within the last thirty years is null, void, and constitutes criminal fraud."

Vanessa lunged forward, her fingers clawing toward the papers. "Lies! It’s all a forgery! Arthur gave that land to ME! I’m his true daughter! Claire was always the unwanted brat who ruined our family!"

"Enough, Vanessa," a quiet, commanding voice echoed from the base of the pier.

Everyone turned.

Jonathan Vance walked into the light. But he was not alone.

Leaning gently on his arm was a tall, elegant woman wrapped in a dark cashmere coat. Her silver-streaked hair was pinned back neatly against the ocean wind. Despite the decades of exile, despite the sorrow etched into the lines around her eyes, her posture was regal, commanding absolute silence from the harbor guards and the commissioner alike.

Vanessa froze, the color draining entirely from her face until she looked like a walking corpse. "No... no, it's impossible. You died in Switzerland..."

The woman stopped five paces from where I stood. Her eyes welled with tears as she looked at me, reaching out a trembling hand that mirrored mine in every line and curve.

"I didn't die, Vanessa," Eleanor Vance said, her voice clear and resonant over the crashing surf. "I survived Arthur Montgomery. And I came home for my daughter."
