Chapter 15 - The Anatomy of a Parasite

Rachel’s eyes finally dropped to the papers. Her face drained of all color as she stared at the forged license—her face beneath my name.
"I didn't have a choice," she whimpered, the defiant mask instantly melting into her signature victimhood. "You don't understand, Claire! You've always been the perfect one, the strong one, the one everyone loved! You had money, you had discipline, and I was drowning! Raymond Cole told me that if I didn't give him collateral, he was going to take the kids! He knew where Mason went to school!"
"Shut up!" Greg roared, suddenly standing up and slamming both fists onto the conference table. The veins in his neck were bulging, his eyes wild with fury. "Do not use our children as an excuse for your criminal sickness, Rachel! You did this fourteen months ago! You weren't protecting the kids—you were borrowing more money to chase your gambling losses before you checked into that clinic!"
Rachel stared at her husband in horror. In fifteen years of marriage, Greg had never once raised his voice to her. He had been the enabler, the apologist, the exhausted husband who smoothed over every disaster she engineered.
Now, the veil had been ripped from his eyes, and there was nothing left behind it but disgust.
"I found your old notebook this morning, Rachel," Greg continued, his voice shaking with pure revulsion. "Under the floorboards in the linen closet. You had Claire’s passwords written down. You had her bank routing numbers. You even had a list of Marcus’s corporate holdings. You were planning this long before you went to Vegas."
I felt the blood drain from my face. I looked at my sister, feeling an emptiness so profound that even my anger evaporated.
She hadn't just used me out of convenience. She had studied me. She had stalked my life, waiting to strip it for parts the moment her own ship sank.
"Jonathan," I said quietly, turning to our attorney. "What are the options?"
Jonathan adjusted his spectacles. "Option one: We file the complete fraud dossier with the District Attorney's financial crimes unit. Rachel will be indicted on multiple class-three felonies. Given the dollar amount and the premeditation, she is looking at four to seven years in a state penitentiary. The civil liability will still exist, but the burden will transfer to her criminal restitution order, fully clearing Claire’s name."
Rachel let out a strangled wail, clutching Greg’s arm. "Greg, please! Don't let them take me from the kids! I'll die in prison! Please, Greg!"
Greg pulled his arm away from her grip as if her skin were coated in acid. He stepped back, turning his face toward the wall.
"Option two," Jonathan continued, his tone clinical and detached, "is that we confront Raymond Cole directly. Marcus’s private investigators spent the night digging into Cole’s syndicate. It turns out Raymond Cole’s collection methods are entirely outside statutory lending laws. The original debt was issued at an illegal usurious rate exceeding forty percent APR. He is operating an unlicensed predatory enterprise. If we turn our evidence over to the state attorney general's racketeering bureau, Raymond Cole will have much bigger problems than chasing Rachel's forged debt."
Rachel looked up, a glimmer of desperate hope in her tear-stained eyes. "Yes! Do that! Attack Cole! He's the bad guy, Claire! He's the monster!"
"You're both monsters," I replied, leaning across the table until my face was inches from hers. "Cole is a predator who preys on the desperate. But you, Rachel... you prey on the people who love you. You feed on the flesh of your own family."
"Claire," Greg said, turning around, tears streaming down his weathered cheeks. "If you send her to prison, I won't stop you. She deserves it. But Sophia, Mason, Lucas, and Oliver... they will carry that public shame for the rest of their lives. I am begging you... help me kill the debt without destroying my children's name."
I closed my eyes. The faces of the four children flashed through my mind: Mason studying at midnight, Sophia crying in my car, the little boys holding my hands at the grocery store.

"Cole will be handled today," I said, opening my eyes. "Marcus and Jonathan will take care of the syndicate. But your marriage, your life, and your consequences, Rachel... those belong to you. And you will sign something for me before I leave this room."
