Chapter 35 - Whispers Beneath the Tide

The rain began to hammer against the harbor cottage windows at midnight. Marcus and I sat side by side, reading through Eleanor Vance’s diary. Her handwriting was elegant, disciplined, yet marked by the unmistakable tremors of a woman who had endured unimaginable hardship.

Page after page recounted Arthur’s systematic takeover of Vance Shipping—how he manipulated the board, forged her signatures on transfer affidavits, and finally, with the assistance of Julian’s father, threatened to take me, her newborn baby, and place me in an untraceable foster system if she did not disappear quietly.

*“I gave up my ships, my name, and my ancestral home,”* Eleanor had written in an entry dated October 1995. *“Not because I was defeated, but because Arthur promised that Claire would be raised with all the honors of the Vance legacy. If he breaks that promise, the maritime keys hidden in the Harbor Bay lighthouse will burn his empire to ashes.”*

"The lighthouse," Marcus murmured, looking out through the rain toward the black silhouette of the Harbor Bay beacon at the end of the rocky promontory. "The Port Authority decommissioned that light in 1998. Arthur bought the structure as a private navigational aid."

"Julian never searched it," Jonathan said, joining us at the table. "He believed Arthur kept everything in the Carson City depository. He never understood that Arthur’s deepest fear wasn't the law—it was Eleanor's retribution."

"Vanessa is going to the council at nine tomorrow morning," I said, closing the diary. "If Julian's emergency lien is accepted by the harbor commissioner, they will seize the deep-water slips by noon. Whatever is inside that lighthouse is the only thing that can stop them."

Marcus grabbed his heavy rain jacket. "Then we don't wait for dawn. The tide is low. We can reach the lighthouse causeway on foot before the morning surge."

"I'm coming with you," I said firmly.

"Claire, the rocks are treacherous in this gale," Jonathan cautioned.

"My mother crossed an entire ocean in secret to keep me safe," I replied, looking him squarely in the eye. "I'm not letting Vanessa and Julian's ghost tear down what she preserved."

Ten minutes later, with flashlights cutting through the driving rain and the roar of the Pacific crashing against the seawall, we stepped out into the tempest toward the dark tower guarding Harbor Bay.
