Chapter 29 - The Dawn of Freedom

The Nevada sun was bright and warm as we walked down the wide marble steps of the courthouse. The desert air, which had felt so suffocating forty-eight hours ago, now smelled crisp, carrying the distant promise of spring.

Federal agents were already escorting Julian Vance into the back of an unmarked Crown Victoria near the curb, his hands cuffed behind his back, his expensive suit rumpled in disgrace. Beatrice Montgomery was whisked away by her private drivers, ruined, humiliated, and stripped of every claim.

At the bottom of the steps, Vanessa stood waiting. She was wearing an oversized trench coat, holding a small manila folder containing her newly restored legal documents.

I walked up to her. For a long moment, neither of us spoke. We were two women who had been forced into a war manufactured by dead men, surviving by sheer will.

"You don't have to run anymore, Vanessa," I said quietly.

She looked down at her hands, fresh tears welling in her eyes. "After everything I said to you... after the way I treated you in that house... why did you protect me, Claire? Why didn't you let them take me?"

"Because Leo, Mia, Sophia, and Mason deserve to grow up knowing that love doesn't leave," I replied, taking her trembling hands into mine. "You made terrible choices. You broke my heart a hundred times. But you brought those babies to me because you knew I would love them. That was the one good choice you made. And for that, I will never let you drown."

Vanessa let out a ragged sob, pulling me into a fierce, desperate embrace. For the first time in our lives, it wasn't a fake sister hugging an imposter. It was two survivors burying the ghost of Arthur Montgomery forever.

"I’m going to enter a treatment center in California," Vanessa whispered, pulling back and wiping her face. "Jonathan Vance set it up. I want to get clean. I want to be someone Sophia and Mason don't have to be ashamed of."

"When you’re ready," I said, smiling through my own tears, "the harbor gate will be open."

Marcus stepped up beside me, slipping his arm naturally around my shoulders. He looked down at me with an warmth so deep and unreserved that it took my breath away.

"Let’s go home, Claire," Marcus said, his voice soft against my ear. "Four kids are waiting for dinner."
