Chapter 25 - The Confrontation in Sedona

Before I could answer, the frosted glass of the motel window shattered inward in an explosion of white shards.

A heavy metal canister bounced onto the carpet, hissing violently as thick, blinding smoke poured into the room. Vanessa screamed, diving behind the bed.

Instinct took over. I pressed the panic button in my pocket with all the force in my thumb, coughing violently as the acrid chemical smoke filled my lungs. The front door was kicked off its hinges with a splintering roar.

Two men in tactical gear burst through the fog, zip-ties in hand. One lunged straight for Vanessa, pinning her against the wall with an iron forearm.

"Get off her!" I screamed, grabbing the heavy bedside lamp and swinging it with everything I had. The brass base slammed into the side of the man’s helmet, knocking him off balance.

The second man turned on me, his gloved hand reaching for my throat—

"Federal injunction! Hands where I can see them!"

Marcus’s voice cut through the smoke like thunder. A deafening crack echoed as a flashbang went off in the doorway, blinding the room in white heat. Jonathan’s private security team swarmed inside, tackling the two intruders to the carpet with brutal efficiency.

Marcus was at my side in a heartbeat, pulling me against his chest, shielding my head with his arm as zip-ties clicked and the intruders were dragged shouting into the hallway.

"Claire, are you hit? Look at me—are you hit?" Marcus’s hands were on my face, checking for blood, his voice shaking with a panic I had never heard in him before.

"I’m fine," I choked out, wiping tears and soot from my eyes. "Vanessa—don't let them take her!"

Vanessa was huddled on the floor, curled into a fetal ball, hyperventilating. Marcus knelt beside her, his demeanor shifting instantly into that of a protective courtroom defender.

"Vanessa Cruz," Marcus said firmly. "Listen to me. The men who just broke in carry badges from the Clark County Special Constable’s office. Julian Vance obtained an emergency extradition warrant under Beatrice Montgomery’s petition. If you leave this room in their custody, you will be sealed in a private psychiatric hold before dawn."

Vanessa looked up through her tangled hair, trembling violently. "They’re going to erase me. They’re going to take my babies to bleed Arthur’s trust dry."

"Not while I am breathing," I said, stepping between her and the shattered doorway.

I looked at the woman who had tormented my youth, who had mocked my sacrifices, who had abandoned her own blood on my doorstep. Every ounce of bitterness I had carried for years evaporated in the smoke of that motel room. She wasn't my enemy; she was another casualty of the Montgomery name.

"Marcus," I said, my voice steady and cold as steel. "We’re going to court. Call Jonathan. Tell him we aren't filing an affidavit. Vanessa is taking the stand in person."
