Chapter 26 - The True Heirs

Ten o'clock the following morning, the Clark County Family Court building in Las Vegas was besieged by local reporters and corporate attorneys. The Montgomery name carried heavy weight in Nevada, and rumors of a forty-million-dollar estate fraud had leaked to the press at sunrise.
Inside Courtroom 4B, the atmosphere was freezing. Sitting across the aisle was Beatrice Montgomery—seventy years old, wrapped in an emerald silk suit, her hands adorned with diamonds, her expression as lifeless as marble. Beside her sat Julian Vance, smug and polished, adjusting his gold cufflinks with a look of supreme confidence.
Judge Alana Ruiz banged her gavel, silencing the murmurs in the gallery.
"We are here on an emergency petition to freeze the assets of the Arthur Montgomery Revocable Trust and to appoint an interim conservator for the minor children, Sophia and Mason Montgomery," Judge Ruiz stated, looking over her half-moon glasses. "Mr. Vance, your motion alleges that the mother of these children does not legally exist."
Julian Vance stood up, exuding venomous charm. "Your Honor, the documents speak for themselves. The biological Rachel Montgomery died in 1996. The individual who has been posing as Arthur Montgomery’s daughter is an imposter named Vanessa Cruz. As such, any custodial rights or trust assignments transferred through that individual are null and void ab initio. Under Nevada probate law, Beatrice Montgomery, as Arthur’s sole surviving legitimate spouse with uncontested community claims, is the rightful guardian of the estate."
"And what of the children?" Judge Ruiz asked sharply.
Julian smiled coldly. "The children are wards of the estate, Your Honor. They will be placed in a private residential academy funded by the trust until their majority."
"They will be placed in an orphanage disguised as a boarding school so you can loot their dividends," Marcus’s voice rang out as he stood from our table.
Julian scoffed. "Mr. Reed, you represent Claire Vance, who has zero blood relation to Arthur Montgomery’s primary Nevada estate. You have no standing here."
"I don't just represent Claire," Marcus said, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "I represent the biological mother of Sophia and Mason Montgomery. And she is ready to testify."
The double doors of the courtroom swung open.
Vanessa walked down the center aisle. She was dressed in a simple navy suit Marcus’s associates had purchased that morning. Her head was held high, her back straight, her face bruised but completely composed.
Julian Vance’s smile vanished. The color drained from Beatrice Montgomery’s face.

"Your Honor," Marcus announced, "I call Vanessa Cruz to the stand."
