Chapter 48 - The Execution of Vance Global

I typed eight characters into the flashing command prompt. Not an alphanumeric sequence. Not a cryptographic string.
`E-L-I-Z-A-B-E-T-H.`
My sister’s name. The sister who died at birth, whose memory Eleanor had erased from the family archives to pretend she was infallible, incapable of producing anything that could falter.
The console froze for a agonizing second. The red warning strobes flickered, turned amber, and then settled into a steady, brilliant cerulean blue.
`CODE ACCEPTED: MOTHER DIRECTIVE OVERRIDDEN.`
`KEY B PURGED.`
`GENESIS SYSTEM: DISARMED.`
`BROADCASTING DE-ENCRYPTION TO MONACO AND EUCOM.`
Eleanor stared at the monitor in paralyzed horror. The breath left her lungs in a hollow, wheezing gasp. "No... no, no, no! What did you do? WHAT DID YOU DO?!"
"I didn't just disarm the kill-switch, Mother," I said, standing tall over her fallen figure. "I opened the closed-loop server. Every single ledger, every secret bank account in the Cayman Islands, every video recording from the Arctic facility, and every wire transfer you used to buy Julian and his corrupt board members is currently being uploaded directly to the International Criminal Court, the Federal Reserve, and Interpol."
"You destroyed the family!" Eleanor screamed, thrashing wildly against the floor, her aristocratic composure completely annihilated. Foam flecked the corners of her mouth. "You destroyed the Vance name! We were gods! We ruled from the dark!"
"You weren't gods," Christian said cold-eyed, stepping up onto the platform and leveling his weapon directly between her eyes. "You were parasites."
At that moment, the distant, thundering roar of heavy rotor blades vibrated through the granite ceiling. Above the bunker, the night sky was filled with the deafening sound of approaching military aircraft.
"French Special Forces and NATO security," Christian said, glancing at his tactical wrist monitor. "They received the de-encryption keys Claire just broadcast. They know who the real target is now."
Henry groaned, pushing himself up against the base of the terminal. Blood was trickling down his gray beard, but as he looked at Eleanor writhing in defeat on the floor, a slow, tragic smile crossed his lips.
"It’s over, Eleanor," Henry said softly. "The curtain has fallen."
Eleanor stopped thrashing. She lay on the cold stone, her hair matted with blood and sweat, staring up at the vaulted ceiling of the bunker she had spent thirty years preparing. The lights above slowly began to hum back to life as the main power grid of Europe restored itself, illuminating her total, catastrophic ruin.
"You think you’ve won, Claire?" Eleanor whispered, a grotesque, bloody smirk curling her lips as heavy tactical boots began hammering down the ventilation shafts above. "You think Julian and I were the only ones playing this game?"
May you like
I turned my back on her. "You don't get to speak anymore, Eleanor. Your voice is officially stripped from the record."
