Chapter 43 - The Sinking Citadel

The freezing seawater crashed against my knees, churning with toxic oil and shattered glass as the *Vance Sovereign* groaned like a dying beast. Alarms wailed in shrieking unison, red emergency strobes cutting through the rising tide inside the ballroom. The floor tilted sharply at an impossible forty-degree angle, sending priceless antique furniture and shattered crystal chandeliers sliding into the black foam below.

"Claire! The aft companionway is collapsing!" Christian roared over the thunder of tearing metal. He had one arm braced against an exposed steel beam, his knuckles white, holding onto Astrid with his other hand. She was shivering violently, her dress soaked in blood and seawater, but her eyes burned with the hard, cold survival instinct of someone who had already crawled back from the dead once.

Henry stumbled beside me, his breathing ragged. My father had spent twelve years rotting in an Arctic glass cage, yet the fire in his eyes hadn't dimmed. He clutched my shoulder, his voice cutting through the roar of rushing water. "The submarine bay beneath the keel has a manual ballast emergency release! If Eleanor launches the sub before we reach the upper deck, the suction will drag the entire hull straight down into the Monaco trench!"

"She wants us buried with her crimes," I said, cold fury surging through my veins, wiping away the exhaustion. I tightened my grip on the titanium briefcase containing the Genesis drive. The cold metal bit into my fingers, grounding me. "We’re not dying in her shadow."

"Helicopter pad is our only exit!" Christian yelled, lunging forward to haul Henry upward as another shockwave rocked the hull. The lower engine room had detonated. A geyser of scalding steam hissed from the service grates, obscuring the corridor in a blinding white fog.

I scrambled up the slick, polished mahogany stairs that were rapidly turning into a waterfall. Every muscle in my body screamed in protest, but adrenaline blunted the agony. Behind us, deep within the belly of the vessel, the massive hydraulic hiss of Eleanor’s escape pod echoed through the hull. She was detaching.

Through the shattered panoramic windows of the upper salon, the scene outside was apocalyptic. Monte Carlo—the jewel of the French Riviera, playground of billionaires and monarchs—was swallowed in an abyss of total darkness. The Genesis drive’s offensive protocol had severed the power grid across the entire coastline. The luxury yachts anchored in the harbor were drifting blindly, their radar arrays dead, sirens echoing faintly across the black water.

We burst onto the wind-whipped helipad just as the tail of the superyacht rose into the night air. The *Vance Sovereign* was slipping vertically beneath the Mediterranean waves.

Hovering twenty feet above the tilting deck was Christian’s private black Eurocopter, its rotors whipping sea spray into a blinding tempest. A winch cable plummeted down, the crew chief shouting frantically into his headset.

"Henry first!" I ordered, clipping the harness onto my father before he could argue. "Astrid, go with him!"

"Claire, you have to get on board!" Henry shouted, his voice whipped away by the gale. "The Pentagon has already scrambled naval interceptors from Sigonella! They think you fired that digital warhead!"

"Then I’ll make sure they see who really pulled the trigger!" I yelled back.

As Henry and Astrid were hoisted into the dark sky, a massive vortex opened in the foaming water fifty yards off the starboard side. A sleek, matte-black mini-submarine broke the surface, its hydrodynamic hull slicing through the wreckage like a predator. For a single heartbeat, its searchlight swiveled upward, blinding me.

Behind the reinforced acrylic dome of the cockpit sat Eleanor Vance. She was seated like a queen on a throne, her immaculate silver hair untouched by the chaos. She didn't look at the sinking ruin of her empire; she looked directly at me. With slow, deliberate elegance, she raised a satellite phone to her ear, tapped the glass in a mocking salute, and allowed the black craft to submerge into the depths.

"Claire, clip in! NOW!" Christian’s voice tore me from the trance. He snapped the second harness around my waist and locked his arms around me as the deck beneath our feet vanished into the abyss.

The cable wrenched us violently into the freezing sky just as the *Vance Sovereign* took its final plunge, swallowed whole by the roaring Mediterranean sea.
