Chapter 21 - Unmasking the Ghost

Seventy-two hours after the blackout in New York, Vance Global was whole once again.

The hostile takeover was declared null and void by the SEC. The massive short positions engineered against us were liquidated, netting Vance Global an extraordinary four-point-two billion dollars in windfall profit from the collapse of Sterling Energy.

Grant’s formal sentencing hearing was scheduled for the following month. With no funds, no allies, and no hope, he had signed every single document relinquishing every penny of our marital assets, returning even his personal watch collection to pay for my legal fees. Sabrina sat in a detention cell awaiting trial without bail, facing twenty years without parole.

I stood on the glass balcony of the Vance Global headquarters in Manhattan, the city sparkling below me like a sea of diamonds.

The door to my office opened, and Daniel walked in, carrying two glasses of vintage vintage champagne. He had traded his tactical gear and court robes for a sharply tailored charcoal three-piece suit.

"The board just finished their emergency ratification," Daniel smiled, handing me a glass. "You have been unanimously confirmed as permanent Chief Executive Officer and Chairwoman of the Vance Group. There isn't a dissenting voice on Wall Street."

"To victory," I said, clinking my glass against his.

"To you, Claire," Daniel murmured softly, his eyes warm and steady. "I have worked with the greatest legal minds and the most ruthless executives in the world. I have never seen anyone dismantle an empire with the precision you showed this week. Your father would have bowed to you."

A feeling of deep, profound peace washed over me for the first time in twelve years. The grief that had haunted my chest since I was eighteen had finally transformed into triumphant closure. My father’s name was cleared. His murderers were behind bars. The empire he built was stronger than ever.

"What happens now, Daniel?" I asked, looking out over the skyline.

Daniel took a sip of his champagne, stepping closer until our shoulders touched. "Now, Claire... you run your empire. You live your life without looking over your shoulder. You fly on your own jet, sit in your own seat, and let the world remember who you are."

I smiled, turning to look at him. For the first time, the cold armor I had worn for weeks began to soften. Daniel had stood beside me through every fire, risking his career, his freedom, and his life without asking for anything in return.

"Daniel," I began softly. "I couldn't have done this without—"

Before I could finish my sentence, an alarm blared across my desk.

It wasn't a standard telephone ring. It was the quantum mainframe terminal we had brought back from Vault 001 in Saint-Moritz, hard-wired into my office's secure server.

Daniel’s smile vanished instantly. He set his champagne down and rushed to the console.

"Claire, that’s impossible," Daniel muttered, his fingers flying across the keys. "The server was locked down. No one outside of our direct satellite bridge has the encryption keys."

"What is it?" I asked, my heart dropping.

The main screen of my office flickered, shifting from the financial ticker to an encrypted live video feed.
