Chapter 29 - The Awakening

The countdown on the Genesis terminal ticked down relentlessly: *01:38:00.*

"We need to get to Manhattan," Daniel said, his voice laced with rising panic. "If Julian's lawyers present the default heir claim to the Southern District Court before we file Henry's verified certificate of life, the judge will have no choice but to grant probate execution! The system is automated!"

"Our jet is grounded," Marcus reported grimly from the airlock intercom. "The port engine took two rounds of 7.62 armor-piercing fire during the firefight. The fuel line is severed. It will take six hours to patch and purge the system."

"We don't have six hours," Astrid snapped. "In an hour and a half, Julian becomes the most powerful shadow broker on the planet."

I stood motionless in the center of the subterranean vault, watching the amber light of the terminal illuminate the harsh angles of my father's face. Twelve years ago, they thought they could eliminate Henry Vance. Six years ago, they thought they could break me with an arranged romance. Two days ago, Julian thought he could humiliate me on my own aircraft.

They had underestimated the Vance bloodline at every single turn.

"We don't need to fly to Manhattan to beat him," I said, my voice cutting through the panic in the room with absolute clarity. "Marcus, how many operational communications arrays do we have in this bunker?"

"The satellite uplink is redundant through a military relay in Tromsø," Marcus replied. "High-bandwidth, encrypted, zero latency."

"Good," I turned to Daniel. "Call the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Call the Chief Judge of the Second Circuit. And tell the warden of the Metropolitan Correctional Center that Claire Vance is requesting an immediate, emergency virtual bail hearing for Julian Sterling."

Daniel blinked, stunned. "A bail hearing? Claire, you fought tooth and nail to keep him locked up without bond! Why would you give him a hearing now?"

"Because Julian is waiting for that countdown," I replied, my eyes gleaming with lethal precision. "He thinks he’s running down the clock in silence. He thinks nobody knows about the Genesis default clause. I want him brought into a secure video conference room in full prison scrubs, with his defense attorney, believing that his victory is five minutes away."

"And then?" Astrid asked, watching me with a mixture of awe and calculation.

"And then we broadcast Henry Vance’s heartbeat directly onto the record of the federal court," I said. "We don't just invalidate the default claim. We trigger the Obsidian Circle's treason clauses. Under the original 1994 charter of the Genesis Trust, any beneficiary who attempts to assassinate or incapacitate the primary trustee forfeits not only their inheritance, but every asset held by their descendants."

Henry’s eyes widened, a slow, predatory grin curling the corners of his mouth. "You memorized the 1994 charter?"

"You made me read it three times before my fourteenth birthday, Father," I said softly, stepping up to the stasis console. "You told me never to sign a contract I couldn't use as a weapon."

"Astrid," Henry commanded, his voice ringing with the old authority that had once commanded international finance. "Connect the neural bridge to the satellite array. Prepare the biometric authentication."

"Father, your neural pathways are still unstable," Astrid warned, her hands hesitating over the primary controls. "Interfacing with a high-capacity quantum terminal so soon after resuscitation could trigger another seizure!"

"I spent twelve years sleeping in a bottle of gel, Astrid!" Henry roared, his voice shaking the dust from the overhead light fixtures. "I did not wake up to let Arthur Sterling’s bastard son take my empire while I sip warm broth! Connect the bridge!"

Astrid swallowed hard and nodded. She pulled a heavy fiber-optic interface cable from the wall and locked it into the port beneath Henry’s collarbone.

A high-pitched hum resonated through the vault. On the main wall screen, the live digital counter of the Genesis Trust flickered from crimson to deep Vance gold.

*COUNTDOWN: 00:45:12.*

"Daniel," I ordered, straightening the collar of my torn, blood-splattered blouse and sweeping my tangled hair behind my shoulders. "Get Manhattan on the line. It’s time to remind Julian Sterling who actually sits at the head of this table."
