Chapter 10 - The Trap Snaps Shut

The Carlyle Hotel was bathed in the golden, discreet glow of old-world Manhattan luxury. At precisely seven-fifty-five, Grant stepped out of a battered yellow cab into the cool night air.

He was clutching a black leather briefcase close to his chest like a newborn child. Inside lay the encrypted SSD drive he had retrieved from a private security vault using the last five hundred dollars in cash he had managed to scrounge from an old emergency envelope.

This was his resurrection.

He took the private elevator to the thirty-fourth floor, his heart hammering against his ribs like a war drum. He smoothed his coat, lifted his chin, and put on his best predatory CEO smile. He was going to show Claire Vance what happened when you tried to put Grant Whitmore in a corner.

He knocked twice on the mahogany door of Suite 3402.

"Come in," a voice called out.

Grant turned the brass handle and stepped inside. "Julian, I have the files. Full access keys, raw encryption protocols, everything you need to—"

The words froze in his throat. The smile slid off his face like melting wax.

Julian Thorne was not sitting alone at the suite’s marble bar.

Sitting across from him, holding a flute of vintage Dom Pérignon, was Arthur Sterling.

And sitting on the velvet sofa in the center of the lavish drawing room, clad in an exquisite midnight-blue evening gown, was me.

Beside me stood two men in sharp, dark suits with gold badges pinned to their lapels—Special Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s White Collar Crime Division.

"Good evening, Grant," I said softly, setting my champagne glass down on the glass table. "You made excellent time."

Grant stumbled backward, his back hitting the closed door with a thud. "Julian... what is this? What the hell did you do?!"

Julian Thorne didn't even look up as he poured himself another finger of single malt. "I have been doing business with the Vance family for thirty-five years, Whitmore. Your late father-in-law was my mentor. Did you honestly believe that a disgraced, thieving little social climber like you could walk into my club and turn me against Claire Vance?"

"You... you played me," Grant wheezed, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the briefcase. "You set me up!"

"You set yourself up, Grant," Arthur Sterling said, his voice dripping with icy amusement. "You just committed industrial espionage, grand larceny, and the attempted sale of proprietary defense-grade technology across state lines. The microphones in this room have recorded every word since you stepped off the elevator."

One of the FBI agents stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Grant Whitmore, put the briefcase on the floor and place your hands behind your back."

"No!" Grant screamed, his face contorting in madness. He hugged the briefcase tighter, his eyes darting frantically toward the door. "This is mine! I built Whitmore Dynamics! You can't take this from me, Claire! You're nothing without me! You hear me? Nothing!"

"Your place, Grant," I said, rising gracefully from the sofa and walking toward him, my voice cutting through his hysterical shrieks like an ice pick. "Do you remember what you asked me on the runway yesterday? You asked me if I knew who held the power."

I stopped right in front of him, looking into his hollow, terrified eyes as the federal agent ripped the briefcase from his grasp and forced his arms behind his back with a brutal, metallic click of steel.

"Now you know," I whispered.
