Chapter 24 - The Gilded Ambush

Beyond the velvet ropes and the gilded mirrors of the Salon Vendôme, an entirely different world existed—a world where billions moved with the flick of an antique cufflink and reputations were slaughtered with a casual murmur over crystal flutes.
I stepped onto the hand-woven Aubusson carpet, the train of my midnight-emerald gown gliding behind me like an oil slick. Every head in the room turned. Six months ago, I was the disgraced wife whose front-row seat at Milan Fashion Week had been handed to a twenty-four-year-old influencer with lip filler and borrowed diamonds. Tonight, I was the sole owner of House of Vane, the woman who had liquidated Julian’s shell companies and watched him dragged away in handcuffs.
At the center of the salon sat the man with the silver cane.
He didn't rise. He didn't need to. Lord Hector Vance, the undisputed patriarch of European luxury and Julian’s former secret financier, merely rested his withered, ring-laden hands upon the wolf-head handle of his cane. His glacial blue eyes tracked my approach, sharp as shattered flint.
"Clara," he said, his voice a raspy cello that silenced the surrounding quartet. "You look remarkably composed for a woman who just destroyed my godson."
"Julian destroyed himself the moment he confused my patience for weakness, Hector," I replied smoothly, stopping precisely three paces before him. "And you enabled him. You gave him the offshore accounts to buy out my mother’s archival sketches."
A dry chuckle escaped Hector’s lips. Around us, the elite of Paris froze, champagne glasses suspended midway to painted lips.
"Sit, child," Hector commanded softly, gesturing to the empty velvet bergère opposite him. "Before you claim another victory, you might want to know why Julian took Chloe to Milan in the first place. You thought it was lust. Julian was an idiot, yes, but he wasn't entirely blind."
My heart hammered against my ribs, though my chin remained level. "Enlighten me."

Hector leaned forward, the emerald in his signet ring catching the chandelier’s glare. "Julian didn't give your front-row seat away to flatter his mistress. He did it to smuggle out the micro-vault key hidden inside the VIP gift bag—the key that accesses your mother’s secret lockbox in Zurich. And Chloe didn't lose it in the hotel room as the police reported."
Hector smiled, a cold, predatory flash of teeth. "She gave it to me."
