Chapter 19 - A Toast to Freedom

Midnight struck as our private convoy arrived at the rooftop salon of the Hotel de Crillon, overlooking the illuminated expanse of Place de la Concorde.
The atmosphere inside was electric. Celeste, her eyes shining with tears of relief, raised a crystal coupe of vintage Krug champagne as Matteo and I entered. The core team—the master embroiderers, the cutters, the publicists—erupted into cheers that rattled the chandeliers.
"To Maison Laurent!" Celeste toasted, her voice ringing clear. "The house that rose from ashes and conquered Paris!"
Glasses clinked, laughter flowed, and for the first time in what felt like a lifetime, the suffocating shadow of the Vance family seemed completely eradicated.
Matteo led me out onto the private balcony. The rain had ceased, leaving the Parisian pavement shimmering like crushed diamonds under the streetlamps. The Eiffel Tower flashed its golden light against the velvet night sky.
"The Ministry of Culture approved our grand artisan grant," Matteo said softly, leaning his hip against the stone balustrade. "Ten million euros to establish the Laurent Academy for traditional textile preservation. It's yours, Claire. Completely uncontested."
I looked out over the city of light, feeling the cool autumn breeze against my neck. "A year ago, I was sitting on a hard wooden bench in the third row, watching Julian give my legacy to another woman. I thought my life was over."
"And now?" Matteo asked, his brown eyes reflecting the golden tower in the distance. He reached down, intertwining his fingers with mine.
"Now I realize that being stripped of everything was the only way I could discover who I actually was," I said, turning to face him. "Julian stole my present, but he couldn't touch my future."
Matteo leaned in, his lips brushing softly against my temple, then lingering near my ear. "And what does the future hold, Madame Laurent?"
"Creation," I whispered, resting my hand on his chest, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart. "Freedom. And maybe... someone who isn't afraid to stand beside me while I rule."
May you like
Matteo smiled, tilting my chin up so my eyes met his. "I don't just stand beside you, Claire. I'll fight an army for you."
He leaned down and kissed me. The kiss was not frantic or hurried; it was deep, patient, and full of promises that didn't need contracts or lawyers to hold true.
