Chapter 20 - The Man with the Silver Cane

At 2:30 AM, as the party inside the Crillon began to wind down to quiet murmurs and lingering laughter, the maitre d' approached our balcony with a heavy silver tray.

"Pardon, Madame Laurent," the man said with a slight bow. "A gentleman delivered this package to the front desk. He requested that it be brought directly to your hands."

Matteo immediately straightened, his protective instinct flaring. "Who was he? I gave strict orders that no unvetted deliveries were to pass security."

"He was an elderly gentleman, Monsieur," the maitre d' answered nervously. "Wore an antique overcoat and carried a silver-topped walking cane. He said it was an heirloom that belonged to Madame Laurent’s late mother, and that her victory tonight unlocked the final vault."

My breath hitched. *Mother?*

On the tray sat a small, square wooden box made of aged rosewood, bound with tarnished iron clasps. On the lid was an intricate, hand-carved crest that I had never seen before: a serpent wrapped around an open compass.

"Stay back, Claire," Matteo said, stepping between me and the tray. He carefully inspected the box, sniffing for chemical traces, checking the latch before slowly unhooking the iron clasp.

The lid swung open.

Inside, nestled on aged purple velvet, lay a single golden signet ring and a yellowed letter dated twenty-five years ago.

I pushed past Matteo’s shoulder, my hands trembling as I picked up the letter. The handwriting was unmistakable. It was my mother’s elegant, sweeping script, written three months before she died in the sudden car accident that had left me an orphan.

I unfolded the paper and read the opening lines under the balcony chandelier:

*My dearest Claire,*

*If you are reading this, it means you have destroyed Julian Vance and reclaimed the emeralds. What you do not yet know is that Julian was never your enemy by accident. He was selected for you.*

*Your father did not die of natural causes, Claire. The man who ordered his death—and who paid the Vance family to marry into our estate and dismantle our lineage—is still alive. He sits on the High Council of the European Luxury Syndicate.*

*The ring inside this box belongs to him. And now that you have stepped into the light, he is coming to finish what he started twenty-five years ago...*

The letter ended abruptly.

A sudden, sharp shadow fell across the balcony from the hotel gardens below. I looked over the railing into the foggy square of Place de la Concorde.

Standing beneath a lone flickering gas lamp, illuminated in the mist, was a tall figure in a dark cashmere coat, leaning upon a gleaming silver cane.

As if feeling my gaze, the man slowly raised his head, lifted his fedora, and touched two fingers to his brim in a chilling, deliberate salute.
