Chapter 22 - Bloodline of Needle and Thread

The sun rose over Paris in a blaze of cold gold, casting long shadows across my private atelier on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Sleep was impossible. While the global press was still celebrating my triumphant reclaiming of the St. Clair emeralds and Julian’s humiliation, a far darker storm was gathering on the horizon.
Matteo had assembled a war room by sunrise. Dossiers were spread across my marble drafting table: corporate filings, shell companies registered in Luxembourg, and decades-old police reports detailing the "accidental" brake failure that claimed my mother and father on a winding mountain road outside Monaco.
"Look at this transaction chain," Matteo pointed out, sliding a yellowed bank ledger toward me. "Two days after your father died, twenty million francs moved from an offshore account tied to Sterling Holdings into a trust fund controlled by Julian Vance’s father. Julian didn't stumble into your life at that charity gala six years ago by chance, Claire. He was groomed, financed, and inserted into your world with explicit orders: marry you, secure power of attorney over the St. Clair patents, and transfer the remaining St. Clair heritage assets to Sterling’s syndicate."
The sheer depravity of it took the breath from my lungs. Every anniversary, every kiss, every whisper Julian had ever offered me had been bought and paid for by the man who murdered my parents.
"And when Julian failed to break me," I said, connecting the dots, "when Julian diverted the money to lavish his mistress Chloe and lost control of the board, Sterling decided to step out of the shadows."
"Sterling doesn't tolerate failed investments," Matteo agreed. "He let Julian rot in prison because Julian is worthless now. But you... you proved yourself stronger than your father. To an apex predator like Sterling, that makes you either a prized acquisition or a fatal threat that must be erased."
My lead seamstress, Madame Laurent, quietly entered the room, holding an antique ledger bound in cracked calfskin. "Madame Claire... while you were going through the archives, I found this in your mother’s private safe behind the showroom mirrors. She hid it the night before she departed for Monaco."
I opened the ledger. It wasn't a financial document. It was an entire lost collection—dozens of revolutionary, hand-painted designs combining woven platinum thread with silk, along with the proprietary chemical formulas for the legendary St. Clair fabric treatments that the fashion world believed were lost to history.
On the final page, my mother had scrawled a note in pencil: *Knowledge is the only shield an empire possesses. If Sterling comes for the crown, bleed him of his pride before you take his life.*
I looked up at Matteo, a razor-sharp smile cutting across my face.
"Sterling wants me to meet him at the Ritz tonight to demand my surrender," I said, closing the book with a resounding thud. "He thinks he’s inviting a frightened orphan into a lion's den. He doesn't know I've spent the last twenty-four hours studying how to skin lions."
"You aren't going alone," Matteo said firmly, stepping closer, his gaze intense and unwavering.
May you like
"Of course not," I replied, leaning in until our breaths mingled. "You’re going to be my banker, Matteo. Because tonight, we aren't just defending our heritage. We're bidding for the soul of Paris."
